Why choose this course?

Primary teaching is a stimulating and rewarding career option. As a primary school teacher, you will provide the foundation for lifelong learning in young minds. You will help students develop thinking, learning and problem-solving skills. With our Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree, you will study all key learning areas, which identify what is important to teach primary students. The program will prepare you to teach across year levels 1 to 7. You can specialise with an optional major, including Language Other Than English (LOTE), or Health and Physical Education (HPE), or you can choose one from a range of minors.

Career outcomes

You will be prepared to teach Years 1 to 7 in a primary school. Teachers develop a range of skills which, in combination with work experience and personal qualities, may equip them for a variety of careers including community education officers and training developers.

Professional recognition

This course meets the requirements for registration as a teacher in Queensland. It is recognised nationally and internationally; however, additional requirements may be needed for some locations.

Units

Your course

Year 1

You will be involved in a foundation year that provides a global overview of learning and teaching. You will commence studies in curriculum and key learning areas in classroom practice as a foundation for the following years.

Year 2

You will focus on the primary years and undertake curriculum, and teaching and learning studies that explore human development, from personal and interpersonal perspectives, and prepare you for your first four-week supervised field experience in a school.

Year 3

You will further develop your knowledge of primary curriculum and explore issues in practising education, with sensitivity to sociocultural contexts. You will continue option studies and undertake your second four-week supervised school-based field experience.

Year 4

You will engage with specific aspects of learning, teaching, schools, policy and practices with almost half of your program involving you in classroom experiences including eight weeks of classroom practice and a final four-week internship that prepares you for your transition into the profession.

Majors and minors

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) offers you the opportunity to specialise in one major or one minor.

Majors

Optional majors include:

  • Languages Other Than English (LOTE)
  • Health and Physical Education (HPE).

Graduates with a major may seek employment as specialist LOTE or HPE teachers.

LOTE major

QUT, The University of Queensland and Griffith University have formed an Australian-first alliance to expand higher learning in a range of Asian and European languages. LOTE is available in French, German, Indonesian, Japanese or Mandarin. LOTE units in Mandarin are undertaken at QUT’s Gardens Point campus. The other languages are undertaken at the other universities.

HPE major

Students graduating with the HPE major will be eligible for membership of the Australian Council of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Students apply for the HPE major after their first year of study. Entry criteria and quotas for this major will apply. This major is available only at Kelvin Grove campus.

If you do not select a major, then one minor, consisting of four units, may be selected instead.

The minors include:

  • Engaging Learners

  • Health and Physical Activity
  • Indigenous Education
  • Literature and Media Studies
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy and Mathematics

Literacy course requirements

All Bachelor of Education students are required to satisfactorily complete assessment criteria relating to Queensland College of Teachers' (QCT) literacy standards by the end of year three of their course in order to meet the course and QCT professional accreditation requirements.

Literacy modules have been developed as a remedial action for students who do not attain satisfactory standards on the relevant literacy criterion during their assessment in the first year of their studies. Students will have the support of the First Year Experience Coordinator. Students may attempt these modules any number of times during the first three years of their program.

At the end of year three, unsatisfactory results within course work and these modules may result in a recommendation for an early exit from the four-year degree. The literacy requirement will also apply to double degree students with a slight variation.
