Unit synopsis

Professional engineers have a "comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline" (Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard for Professional Engineer). This process engineering unit uses advanced concepts of chemistry, design, economics and physics in a real engineering context. You will develop the ability to recognise and apply methods to design plant to solve real world problems utilising chemical, thermodynamic, fluids and kinetics with subsequent evaluation of the techno economics, sustainability and environmental impacts. You will undertake site visits and laboratory working in groups to plan, design and evaluate plant design. You will use this to demonstrate the culmination of knowledge and appreciation across a number of technical areas.

Oceans make up 70% of the Earth's surface, yet less than 5% of them have been explored. There is therefore still much to learn about the marine environment, marine resources, and management, and how oceans affect atmospheric circulation. This unit takes a bottom-up approach introducing students to the major geological processes and geomorphology features that shape the ocean floor, dynamic sediments and biology that are sourced and distributed by ocean currents and chemistry, followed by an overview of the factors governing ocean circulation and ocean water properties and finally looking at how oceans affect atmospheric circulation and climate.  The interaction of all these processes has a direct societal impact such as management of marine resources, including the Great Barrier Reef, infrastructure, natural hazards, weather patterns, and climate change.

A mineral resource represents an enrichment of an element or mineral that can be mined for a profit, and Australia's wealth and future economic growth depend largely on these resources. Develop a theoretical background and understanding of the major aspects of mineral resource formation; develop the practical skills to describe and interpret mineralised rocks and their host sequences; and plan and execute an exploration program. Learning approaches include, lectures (including guest industry lectures) and practical sessions using samples from famous ore bodies across the globe (hand samples and thin sections for microscopic study). Students are assessed based on a group project and theoretical and practical exams. Many students find the semester-long mineral exploration group project a highlight, as students get an opportunity to use a variety of real datasets to ‘explore’ for mineral prospects. The JK Education Endowment Award is given to the group with the top mark.

New teachers often deem student behaviour to be one of the most confronting aspects of their new careers. The behavioural concerns presented by students who are living with the outcomes of complex trauma can be significant, persistent and unresponsive to more traditional approaches to behaviour management. By examining the impact of complex trauma on the developing brain and nervous system, you'll develop your understanding of why and how these behaviours occur and explore approaches and strategies recommended to address short and longer-term concerns for students. You'll be informed and prepared for the times you are responsible for the learning and well-being of these students whilst minimising any negative impact on your own well-being or teaching practice.

Unit synopsis

The aims of this unit are twofold: a) to develop your knowledge of the learning characteristics of students with learning difficulties (in reading, writing and math) and b) to build your capability to design evidence-based educational resources for supporting these students in inclusive contexts. This option unit will focus on evidence-based strategies to ensure identification and high quality instruction for students with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) within a tiered support system. As a pre-service teacher, you will develop your competence to disseminate your scholarly knowledge to professional audiences.
