Details

If you unashamedly love cartoons, enjoy watching 3D movies, can hold your own in any video game, or find yourself compulsively doodling, then consider a career in the exciting world of animation.

Our animation degree explores 2D and 3D computer animation, game development and animated storytelling. Throughout the course, you will work in a studio setting, where you will be supported to express and develop your ideas in creative and innovative ways. You will gain an understanding of the history and craft of animated filmmaking, character animation and motion graphics. You will learn the techniques of real-time and advanced 3D computer graphics, virtual environments and special effects for film and TV.

Why choose this course?

QUT graduates are highly regarded in the animation, games and visual effects industries, because they are versatile, innovative and career ready.

This course provides a solid grounding in the fundamental concepts, practices and history of animation, which form a foundation for you to build your own innovative practice. You will be encouraged to experiment with a range of animation styles and techniques while producing your own animations, graphics, and visual effects. In your final year your work will be showcased to industry professionals in a graduate exhibition.

Through emphasis on industry workflows, tools, process and skills, you will be equipped with a strong understanding of current industry practices, from concept development to timelines and finished works.

Throughout the course, you can work on real-world projects or develop an individual practice. You will tailor your learning to the part of the industry most interesting to you.

Career outcomes

QUT graduates are employed as animators, concept artists, visual effects producers, game artists and designers in a range of industries including animation studios and traditional film production houses, computer games companies, visual effects and post-production companies, advertising and design agencies, and information visualisation and real-time studios.

Brisbane offers a variety of companies in which graduates find employment. Others work throughout Australia and across the globe. Several are award-winning storytellers, successfully producing animated short films that screen at festivals globally. Pathways exist to prepare you for further study including honours.

Units

Your course

Year 1

You will focus on developing your eye for visual communication and on extending representation into motion graphics. You will gain a solid grounding in the history and practices of animation as a foundation to build your own creative practice. The first year will allow you to get settled in the medium of animation.

Year 2

Building on the knowledge and skills you gained in the first year, you will settle into the animation studios, where you will begin an intensive investigation into workflow, studio communication, and responses to briefs. You will study character development, conceptual design and animation layout principles and techniques. You will learn and use techniques in 3D computer graphics, modelling, shading, real-time development, UV texturing and matte painting, as you respond to assessment and develop animated elements to support your ideas. Through the processes of critical analysis, you will be encouraged to evaluate your own work, interrogate the way you present your ideas visually and will refine it as you progress towards your vocational goal.

Year 3

You will consolidate your work by extending your understanding of the workflows of an animation studio. You will extend your knowledge of production management, and your skills in 3D computer animation, real-time computer graphics, and virtual environments. Your final year is about consolidating your eye for detail, your responsiveness to problems, your ability to research and develop ideas, in order to deliver an animated work to professional standard. You will produce a substantial work, which will be showcased to industry professionals in a public exhibition. The final year also gives you an opportunity to specialise through project work or preparation for honours or postgraduate research.
