Why choose this course?

The media industry has changed and so have careers within it. Today, creators, platforms and digital audiences shape how content is produced, shared, and monetised. This course combines specialised knowledge of the media industry with entrepreneurship strategiesand advanced digital communication skills, preparing you to succeed in a media environment increasingly influenced by data, digital platforms and emerging technologies.

Through the Bachelor of Communication (Media Entrepreneurship), you will learn how media communication and branded content are developed, tested, grown, and monetised in a platform-driven world. You will build knowledge of audiences, content creation, and innovative digital business models while developing the strategic thinking required to identify opportunities to create sustainable media brands and ventures.

The Master of Digital Communication extends these capabilities through advanced study of social media storytelling, communication analytics, artificial intelligence, data visualisation and the digital creative economy. You will develop a deeper understanding of how digital platforms are transforming communication production, distribution and audience engagement across industries.

By completing both qualifications, you will graduate with a unique combination of entrepreneurial thinking, communication expertise and advanced digital capabilities that can be applied across media, communication, creative, government and commercial sectors.

Real-world learning

At QUT, you will not just learn about the media industry. You will experience it. Your learning is informed by industry practice and shaped by real-world media contexts. You will work with contemporary tools and platforms used by creators, media professionals and digital strategists, developing skills that translate directly to the workplace.

This hands-on approach will help you graduate with practical experience and a strong understanding of how media operates in real-world contexts. You will have opportunities for work-integrated learning, including internships with production companies, media agencies and cultural organisations.

In your advanced digital communication studies, authentic learning experiences will allow you to apply your knowledge to complex communication scenarios. You may also undertake real-world or industry projects, study tours or university-wide electives, while building a professional digital brand across multiple platforms.

What to expect

This vertical degree combines the Bachelor of Communication, majoring in Media Entrepreneurship, with the Master of Digital Communication.

Your studies will begin by building a foundation in critical thinking, communication and media production, alongside core principles of entrepreneurship. You will learn how media ideas are developed, shaped and tested, gaining an understanding of audiences, digital platforms and the commercial realities of the media landscape.

As you progress, you will develop the skills to analyse audience behaviour, identify opportunities and design sustainable media products and ventures. In your final undergraduate units, you will explore hosted and platform-based media systems, examining emerging business models, regulatory challenges and the creative and economic pressures facing media founders. Through a capstone experience, you will work collaboratively to develop and pitch a comprehensive business strategy for a hosted media venture or self-owned enterprise, applying market analysis, audience insight and entrepreneurial frameworks to real-world scenarios.

Your Master of Digital Communication studies will further develop your expertise in social media storytelling, communication analytics, artificial intelligence and data visualisation.
