Why choose this course?
The media industry has changed – and so have the careers within it. Today, creators, platforms and digital audiences shape how content is made, shared and monetised. The Media Entrepreneurship major prepares you to succeed in this new landscape. You’ll learn how to create, grow and monetise media in a platform-driven world – whether you want to build your own business or lead digital strategy for organisations.
Real-world learning
At QUT, you won’t just learn about the media industry – you’ll experience it. Your learning is informed by industry practice and shaped by real‑world media contexts. You’ll work with contemporary tools and platforms used by creators, media professionals and digital strategists, developing skills that translate directly to the workplace.
This hands‑on approach ensures you graduate with practical experience and a strong understanding of how media operates in real‑world contexts. You’ll have opportunities for work-integrated learning, including internships with production companies, media agencies, and cultural organisations.
Visit the student and graduate blog to find out more about what it’s like to study communication and where a QUT degree can take you.
Explore this course
Your studies will begin by building a foundation in critical thinking, communication and media production, alongside core principles of entrepreneurship. You’ll learn how media ideas are developed, shaped and tested, gaining an understanding of audiences, digital platforms and the commercial realities of the media landscape.
As you progress, you’ll develop the skills to analyse audience behaviour, identify opportunities, and design sustainable media products and ventures. You’ll learn how to apply strategy, innovation and business thinking to storytelling and content creation, preparing you to launch your own media initiatives or drive growth and innovation within existing media organisations.
In your final units you’ll explore hosted and platform‑based media systems, examining emerging business models, regulatory challenges and the creative and economic pressures facing media founders. Through a capstone experience, you’ll work collaboratively to develop and pitch a comprehensive business strategy for a hosted media venture or self‑owned enterprise, applying market analysis, audience insight and entrepreneurial frameworks to real‑world scenarios.
Flexible course options
Pairing media entrepreneurship with a communication second major such as journalism, media and communication industries, screen industries, or promotional communication gives you a competitive edge. This combination broadens your skill set to include strategic storytelling, audience engagement, and media analysis.
Or you might like to add minors such as strategic communications, news and factual media, or social media strategy to specialise in areas that complement media entrepreneurship. These options allow you to tailor your degree to your interests and career goals, opening pathways into content creation and digital strategy.
Double degrees
Maximise your career opportunities by combining media entrepreneurship with another degree to create your own specialist career niche.
Pair media entrepreneurship with legal expertise to navigate regulation, intellectual property and ethical challenges in digital media and creative industries.
- Bachelor of Communication (Media Entrepreneurship)/Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
