Why choose this course?
Exercise physiologists have specialised clinical skills that allow them to develop rehabilitation programs for patients with acute and chronic medical conditions in hospitals and other clinical settings. They can also provide advanced injury prevention and exercise programming advice, and are in high demand in the sports science industry. Medicare and many private health insurers recognise and cover exercise science services supplied by accredited exercise physiologists.
Course summary
The Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology combines a balance of theory and clinical practice to prepare you for a dynamic career in the industry. During the course you will complete foundation studies in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and psychology and learn how to apply this knowledge to a range of neurological, psychological and musculoskeletal disorders. As a student, you will have access to the latest industry equipment in the biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology and strength conditioning laboratories, and in the QUT Health Clinics.
During the course you will complete more than 500 hours of clinical experience at state, national or international locations.
Many students have done practical placements in Asia, USA, UK, and Europe, leading them to overseas job opportunities after graduating. Students also have the opportunity to work in the on-campus Exercise Clinic, allowing them to work directly with clients in areas such as health and fitness evaluation, exercise prescription, pre-employment screening and physiological testing.
Career outcomes
Accredited exercise physiologists have skills that can be applied to a variety of clinical and sport science professions. Many graduates are employed by hospitals and clinics for prevention and rehabilitation of patients with injury and a range of cardiac, musculoskeletal, occupational, neurological and psychological disorders. Graduates can also move into private practice and work as specialists in clinical diagnostics, exercise programming and health promotion.
Exercise and sports science specialists work across the community ranging from children to the elderly, including a focus on people with disabilities and elite athletes.
To help you with decisions about electives, practicum placements and how to position yourself for a career in the exercise and sports science field, consider these four broad professional areas that many of our students follow:
- Health and wellness - includes the fitness industry (gyms, corporate wellness and fitness programs), worksite health promotion and community physical activity programs.
- Sports performance - focused on the provision of specialised sports training and assessment for schools, professional teams, community sports clubs and disabled athletes.
- Exercise rehabilitation - focused on individuals with disease or injury and involves clinically relevant functional testing and the prescription of appropriate exercise or retraining.
- Research - not only includes university positions but also industry and government positions after the completion of further study.
The field of exercise and sports science provides a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining health and fitness and to helping people feel good about themselves.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for professional membership of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an accredited exercise physiologist. ESSA is a professional organisation committed to tertiary trained exercise and sports science practitioners and accredits QUT's graduates as exercise physiologists.
Honours
A degree with honours may be awarded to students who have recorded an outstanding achievement in the four-year program.
