Why choose this course?

Journalism is changing as digital platforms, audience behaviour, data and emerging technologies reshape how news is produced, distributed and consumed. This course combines practical journalism education with advanced study in digital communication, helping you build the skills to create credible and compelling stories within this evolving environment.

In the Bachelor of Communication component, you will learn how to research, write and produce journalism across print, broadcast and digital platforms. You will explore ethical reporting, data-driven journalism, audience engagement and the social, cultural and economic forces shaping the news industry.

Your Master of Digital Communication studies will extend these capabilities through advanced learning in social media storytelling, communication analytics, artificial intelligence, data visualisation and the digital creative economy. You will develop a deeper understanding of how platforms and technologies influence communication, while learning to apply research and critical thinking to complex communication challenges.

By combining undergraduate and postgraduate study, you will graduate with practical journalism capabilities and advanced digital communication knowledge that can be applied across news, media, government, community and communication organisations.

Real-world learning

Real-world learning is embedded throughout the course.

Your journalism studies include collaborative projects that reflect professional newsroom workflows. You will gain experience pitching ideas, interviewing, researching, editing stories, producing multimedia content and managing production schedules. You may also investigate and create long-form multimedia work on topics that interest you.

Internships and other work-integrated learning opportunities can provide experience within media and communication organisations and help you develop professional networks. Depending on the available course options, you may also be able to participate in an industry project or international study tour.

In your advanced digital communication studies, you will apply your knowledge to authentic communication scenarios and may work with real-world clients or industry-focused projects. You will also be encouraged to build a professional digital brand across multiple platforms and complete advanced research that brings together the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course.
