Details
Master of Education (Inclusive Education) prepares you to develop specialist knowledge and skills in relation to the instruction and support of students with learning difficulties and disabilities in inclusive classrooms and schools. While the understanding and application of learning theory is essential to the teaching of all students, most students with learning difficulties and disabilities require specialised instructional approaches to maximise their potential and achieve success. To address the learning, social and behavioural needs of these students, teachers and other professionals require an understanding of theoretical models, sociocognitive processes, current research and best practices related to supporting students with learning difficulties and disabilities. In addition, well-developed skills in consultation, collaborative problem solving and reporting are required.
The study area units are designed to develop your understanding of theory, policy and practice in relation to inclusive education as well as to extend your knowledge and skills with regard to teaching and supporting students with reading and writing difficulties, students with behavioural difficulties, and students who have been identified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Across the units, you will develop your understanding of theoretical models and processes, current research and best practices. You will also be focusing on ‘inclusive education’ rather than ‘special education’. Accordingly, the units will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills in consultation, collaborative problem solving, planning and reporting. Such skills are critical to the successful inclusion of students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Career outcomes
This study area is designed to prepare teachers, support teachers and allied professionals (for example, guidance officers, social workers and health professionals) to assist children, adolescents and adults with learning, social and behavioural challenges. If you are particularly interested in a specific career (for example, learning support teacher), please consult with your employer as to whether this program meets their particular requirements.
Units
In the Inclusive Education study area you are required to complete the two (2) MEd core units:
- EDN610 Professional Dialogues in Education
- EDN611 Professional Applications of Research
plus the four (4) Inclusive Education core units:
- SPN644 Inclusive Education: Theory, Policy and Practice
- SPN647 Understanding Reading and Writing Difficulties
- SPN649 Supporting Students with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Needs
- SPN650 Supporting Students with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder
as well as two (2) option units (a total of 96 credit points).

Entry requirements
An appropriate four (4) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean
or
a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean PLUS at least one year of appropriate professional or industrial experience.
