Choosing to study a Master of Education can be a great step for both you and your students. And with QUT, you can completely customise your study experience to suit the areas of interest to you.

But building the right degree can feel like a complicated process. To help, we’ve summarised the 3 main paths you can take, and what your course may look like if you’ve earned advanced standing towards your Master of Education.

Option 1: Choose one area of expertise

A major and a range of option units

If you know exactly how you’d like to make a difference in the world of education, this might be your option. Across your 1.5 years of full time-equivalent study, you’ll complete:

  • 48 credit points of your chosen major plus
  • 48 credit points of option units (selected from across other possible majors) plus
  • 48 credit points of research units; or
  • 36 credit points of research units, plus 12 credit points of option units.

The advantage with a single major is that you can put a large portion of your studies into a chosen field, while still getting exposure to the supporting study areas that appeal to you most.

You can also choose whether to put 48 credit points towards research units, or just 36.

Option 2: Choose two areas of expertise

A major and a second specialisation

This option might be best for people who have two areas of expertise they’d like to pursue, or if a pair of specialisations can be used harmoniously in your future career. For example, you may find specialising in both Trauma-Aware Education and Inclusive Education can help bring out your best in the classroom.

Over the 1.5 full time years of study, you’ll complete:

  • 48 credit points of your chosen major
  • 48 credit points of your second specialisation
  • 48 credit points of research units; or
  • 36 credit points of research units, plus 12 credit points of option units.

Option 3: Complete customisation

You may find that certain units across a multitude of majors are of interest to you, and your dream degree blends skillsets across various facets of education.

In this case, across the same 1.5 full time years of study, you’ll complete:

  • 96 credit points of option units
  • 48 credit points of research units; or
  • 36 credit points of research units, plus 12 credit points of option units.

The 96 credit points of option units gives you complete autonomy to choose the subjects that most appeal to you, across any and all majors.
