Step 1: Entry requirements

General requirements

Before you apply, make sure you meet the basics:

  • You must be 18 years or older and not hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

If you are enrolled at one of our exchange partner institutions and applying for an exchange place, you'll need to be nominated by your home institution first.

Academic requirements

  • At least one year of full-time study at a recognised institution.
  • Hold a GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale (or equivalent)

English language requirements

You'll need to provide an English language test result taken within the past two years if:

  • English is not your first language
  • Your prior study has not been taught in English

If your home institution is a QUT exchange or study abroad partner, we may be able to accept evidence of your English proficiency from your home institution.

We accept scores from the following tests:

  • IELTS (Academic)/One Skill Retake: 6.5 overall, no sub-score below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 79 overall (minimum writing 21; reading 16; listening 16; speaking 18)
  • PTE Academic: 58 overall, no sub-score below 50
  • Cambridge Advanced (CAE): 176 overall, no sub-score below 169
  • Cambridge Proficiency (CPE): Grade C1

Need help to meet the entry requirements?

If you do not meet the English language entry requirements for our study abroad program, don't worry you can study English language programs at QUT College before your study abroad semester. When you apply for our study abroad program, select the 'English language program' option and we will let you know the process you will need to follow. You can also choose to combine your study abroad experience with diploma-level units or communication units instead of an English program.

Step 2: Choose your units and submit your application

Complete the online application

You can submit your application by:

  • Completing the online application yourself via the QUT application portal.
  • Applying through a QUT representative in your home country.
  • Applying  through the international office if you study at one of our study abroad partner institutions.
  • Applying via the link provided in your accepted nomination for an exchange place.

You can submit your application through the QUT application portal, via a QUT representative, or through your home university's international office.

We accept applications year-round up to the semester start date. Offers and acceptances are usually provided within 1 day where faculty assessment of pre-requisite study is not required. In the rare scenario where it’s too late to start for the current semester, we will defer your offer to the following semester.

Attach required documents

  • A copy of your most recent official academic record (grades) in English.
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (if required), and
  • Photocopy of your passport (valid for 6+ months after your program ends)

Nominate your units

As part of your application, you will also need to list the units you wish to study at QUT.  You should make sure your home institution also approves these unit choices.

While QUT students usually study four units each semester, you should include at least six units on your application to allow for flexibility. You'll also have a chance to include supporting documents in this part of your application. You may be asked to submit detailed unit outlines for units you've already completed if your chosen units require prerequisite study.

Step 3: Accept your offer

You will normally receive an offer of a place at QUT within a couple of days. To accept your unconditional offer, did you apply through an agent or directly to QUT?

Through an agent or representative

If you applied through an agent or QUT representative, they will guide you through the steps to accept your unconditional offer and pay your fees.

Directly to QUT

  • Login to the QUT application portal.
  • Go to: Respond to your offer and select 'Accept'.
  • Complete the acceptance of offer form and details.
  • You will then be taken to a payment portal to finalise your payment.

You will be notified when you have finalised your acceptance, and we will send you a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), if applicable. If you require a student visa, you can then use your CoE to apply for one. You will not be able to apply for your Australian student visa until you have received your CoE.

Step 4: Apply for your visa

Student visa

It is very important that you check that all the details on your CoE are correct before you apply for your visa.  You will need to attach your CoE to your Australian Student Visa application. It can take several weeks to be granted your student visa so make sure you apply with enough time to process your visa application.

Visa assessment

Your application for a visa will be assessed by the Department of Home Affairs. Find more information about visa assessment processes via the Department of Home Affairs website.
