Hi, my name is Kateryna and I’m an exchange student from Ukraine. I love expanding my expertise in different countries, as it allows me to approach the same challenges from new perspectives. Studying overseas is an incredible opportunity to gain fresh insights, adapt to different ways of thinking, and grow both academically and personally.

Why I choose QUT

QUT is a fantastic university for exchange students because of its supportive and welcoming environment. Before applying for my exchange, I carefully researched Australian universities, focusing on rankings, available programs, and learning experiences. QUT was my first choice because of its excellent study options in interaction design, UX/UI, and digital experience design. I was particularly fascinated by its hands-on, industry-focused approach, which fits perfectly with my degree. The opportunity to work on real-world projects and access innovative tools made it the ideal place to improve my skill set.

What my exchange experience has meant to me

This exchange has given me valuable insights into diverse design approaches and global perspectives in interaction design. I’ve gained hands-on experience with emerging technologies, collaborated with students from different cultural backgrounds, and adapted to new ways of thinking. These experiences will not only enhance my honours project but also shape my future work by making me more adaptable, innovative, and open to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Real world learning

One thing that especially impressed me was how QUT delivers on its tagline 'the university for the real world'. In one of my modules, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a real design company on their app, which was still in development. We gained access to the company's private information and worked as UX designers on a real product conducting interviews, analysing existing design elements, brainstorming potential solutions, creating prototypes, and ensuring the product met user needs while aligning with company goals. I was truly amazed by how well this experience reflected the university’s focus on practical learning and its strong industry connections.

Student life

I really enjoyed campus life and the fantastic facilities at QUT. Both Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses are lovely, offering plenty of great spots to relax or study at. One of my favourites things to do after my morning class is getting lunch at the university food court and heading to one of the outdoor study areas to take a break and enjoy the view. There’s always something to do between study sessions whether it’s playing a game of ping pong or taking a quick swim at the university’s aquatic centre.

Welcome Week and the exchange student orientation events were great opportunities to start connecting with others. From there, I gradually built connections in my classes especially through group projects and in sports clubs. I joined the QUT Surf Club and really enjoyed the trips they organised. It was a great opportunity to expand my social circle, experience the Australian surf culture, and explore different parts of the country.

Student support

HiQ at QUT was a great service that really helped me settle in. I had some general questions, as well as specific ones about the facilities, and the staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. The communication with tutors is also fantastic. I always feel respected and appreciate how open they are to listen to my questions and suggestions.

Living in Brisbane

Choosing QUT in Brisbane was the best decision I could have made. I love how calm the city feels while still offering plenty of things to do. One of my favourite places is South Bank, with its amazing food options and the perfect spot to get a tan.

Exploring Australia

Australia offers endless opportunities for exploration! I did an incredible road trip from Cairns down to Brisbane, visiting the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays, Airlie Beach, Magnetic Island, and many other stunning spots along the way. I spent New Year 2025 in Sydney, witnessing the famous Opera House fireworks. I also had a chance to explore different parts of Queensland, discovering its many hidden gems. There’s still so much to see, but not enough time to visit it all!
