Improving Discretionary Performance Through Identification, Employee Wellbeing, Leadership And Support

Supervisors

  • Professor Lisa Marie Bradley (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Cameron Newton (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis investigated the impact of identification, employee wellbeing, leadership and support on discretionary performance. Study one revealed the importance of work unit and organisational identification, employee wellbeing, and supportive leadership in driving employee discretionary performance. Study two revealed that professional identification positively influenced employee discretionary performance via higher wellbeing when within-organisational support was high. This thesis enhances understanding of the interaction of key influential workplace variables and their role in extending performance beyond set performance expectations.

Thesis Title

The Role of Valuation Specialists in Determining the Reporting Quality of Level 3 Fair Value Measurement

Supervisors

  • Dr Daifei Yao (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Yuyu Zhang (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis investigates the role of auditors’ valuation specialists in determining reporting quality of Level 3 fair value measurements (FVMs). Using a sample of international banks, I find that using valuation specialists in auditing Level 3 FVMs can effectively improve the reporting quality of Level 3 FVMs, reflected in less earnings management, higher earnings persistence, and higher value relevance. The findings suggest valuation specialists play an essential role in enhancing auditors’ fair value expertise. Standard setters may need to pay more attention to the requirements of disclosing the involvement of valuation specialists in fair value auditing.

Thesis Title

Multi-Dimensional Framework of Paradoxical Thinking: A Qualitative Exploratory Study in an Australian Financial Services Organisation

Supervisors

  • Professor Cameron Newton (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Anna Monika Wiewiora (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Pervasive and multi-level paradoxical tensions continue to impact many organisations and the individuals who work there. Despite burgeoning literature that has explored paradoxes in general, the existing research into paradoxical thinking (PxT) as an effective response to paradoxical tensions has been fragmented and lacking an overarching framework. This thesis examined several dimensions of PxT, with the aim of better understanding how PxT unfolds. Contributions include a novel conceptualisation of multilevel PxT and how it unfolds within and between individuals, collective and organisational levels, as well as over time.

Thesis Title

Superannuation Member Disengagement and Fund Efficiency: The Impact of the Fees and Costs Section in Superannuation Fund Product Disclosure Statements

Supervisors

  • Dr Bronwyn McCredie (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Kerrie Lee Sadiq (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis adopts behavioural finance as the theoretical framework to investigate whether the fees and costs section in Product Disclosure Statements (PDSs), following two regulatory changes affecting this section, engage members and enhance superannuation fund efficiency. By using a mixed-method, this research shows that the fees and costs section in PDSs examined over seven years (2013 to 2019) are readable by the general public but are not accessible. More importantly, the fees and costs section in PDSs do not effectively engage superannuation members or enhance fund efficiency, even though this section has undergone different regulatory changes to achieve these goals.

Thesis Title

Female Shop Floor Worker Voice in the Corporate Social Responsibility Agenda of the Sri Lankan Apparel Industry

Supervisors

  • Deanna Chantal Cristina Grant-Smith (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Robyn Petra Mayes (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Dinuka Wijetunga (External Supervisor)

Citation

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives are used to respond to and deflect criticism regarding unfair labour standards in Global South production sites. This study, focusing on Sri Lankan apparel industry, reveals that Global South apparel suppliers deploy CSR initiatives as a political strategy to diffuse female workers’ consciousness of their exploitation, and as a lived shopfloor practice to co-opt workers in managerial agendas. Adopting theories of intersectionality, hegemony, and labour process, and deploying an interpretive, qualitative methodology, this thesis exposes the implicit and explicit exclusion and suppression of female worker voice in the CSR agenda of global production sites.
