Thesis Title

Doing Dementia Friendly Communities Locally: Tensions in Committee Practices and Micro-Processes

Supervisors

  • Dr Judith Ann Burton (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Evonne Miller (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Lisa Maree Stafford (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explored the micro-processes of Dementia Friendly Community principles through committees. Using micro-ethnography and a case study approach, two Australian- Queensland DFC committees were studied to better understand local-level implementation. This involved semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and field notes. Findings from this study illustrated that while both committees had well-meaning intentions, stark differences in structure, processes, and approaches were evident. To enable full participation of people living with dementia in local committees, understanding and awareness of inclusive micro-processes are key. Integrating Community Development with a DFC approach also helps address the gaps in processes to build authentic sustaining DFCs.

Thesis Title

"I'm a Person of Value" - People with Intellectual Disability Negotiating Paid Support Relationships

Supervisors

  • Dr Judith Ann Burton (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Jennifer Margery Mays (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Changing philosophies affect change in how people with disability are supported. In Australia, paid workers provide most formal services in people’s homes. However, the experience of support from the perspective of those accessing services is concealed. This qualitative research analysed accounts of people with intellectual disability to reveal their experiences of support. Contrasting dominant social narratives of dependence, ‘being a person of value’ was a central theme in the perception and presentation of self in support relationships. These findings call for support agencies to offer greater respect, person-centredness, choice and control to people with intellectual disability.

Impact of Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling on Dietary Choices in Nepal

Supervisors

  • Dr Katherine Bernadette Cullerton (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Jennifer Margery Mays (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Marguerite Claire Sendall (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Katherine Marie White (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis is a mixed-method study investigating the effectiveness of front-of-pack nutrition labelling in guiding food choices in Nepal including a review of the global evidence on its equity impact across socio-economic status. The thesis examines the effects of different front-of-pack labelling schemes among Nepalese consumers which supports multiple traffic light labelling in improving consumers’ understanding of food product healthfulness. Furthermore, the exploration of key stakeholders’ views providing insights to policy context of nutrition labelling indicates Nepal government can progress front-of-pack labelling as a part of comprehensive public health and nutrition strategy to improve population diets.

Thesis Title

The Professional and Personal Impact of the Australian and New Zealand Comprehensive Gynaecological Surgery Training Program on Specialists in Training and Third-Party Stakeholders

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Bruce C Dunphy (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Julie Hepworth (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Reece Amr Hinchcliff (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Steven Michael McPhail (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This research explores why specialists undertake further training in advanced gynaecological surgery, how and why such training pathways develop and how they are regulated. This research advocated for the acceptance of alternative training pathways and shaped postgraduate medical education and workforce planning. Through a mixed-methods approach, this thesis constructs a historical timeline as the foundation for a critical analysis of the professionalization of operative gynaecology and establishes the main reasons for advanced training as the development of surgical competency, recognition, certification, and involvement in academic activities, emphasizing the training unit, surgical case load, a structured curriculum and peer group.
