Is battery storage overrated? Achieving grid equilibrium through digital energy services and analytics

The share of renewable energy in electricity generation has globally increased to 28.3%, however, an acceleration of the sustainable energy transition is required to limit worldwide temperature rise (REN21, 2022).Energy storage offers various benefits, such as balancing the mismatch between electricity supply and demand; however, due to its charge/discharge inefficiencies (energy storage results in a loss of at least 10% of electricity in the charge/discharge process), digital solutions are needed to manage grid equilibrium effectively (Watson et al., 2022).In this …

Engineering response to climate emergency with zero carbon footprint for building construction by 2030 using circular economy principles

We as engineers can make a contribution to address the current climate emergency. The Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council report (2016) found that if Australia's built environment sector reaches zero carbon emissions for the operation of residential and commercial buildings by 2050, it could contribute 28% to the country's 2030 emissions reduction target and save up to AU$20 billion. In this project we will consider the application of the circular economy, which is based on the principles of designing out waste and …

Metagenomic analysis of bacterial contamination screening pooled platelets

Bacterial sepsis is second only to ABO incompatibility as a cause of death from transfusion. Bacterial contamination of platelets is recognised as the most significant residual infectious risk of transfusion in developed countries. Bacterial Contamination Screening (BCS) has been required for testing of pooled and apheresis platelets manufactured by the Blood Service since April 2008. International microbiological culture studies suggest that the incidence of bacterial contamination ranges from 1:3000 to 1:1000 units of apheresis platelets and 1 in 600 to …

Blast response and safety assessment of transport tunnels

Transport tunnels are important components of the transport systems in major cities. They can be vulnerable to bomb explosions caused by accidental or deliberate means. This project will evaluate the vulnerability of transport tunnels to credible blast events and the influence of key parameters. We'll then propose measures to mitigate the adverse effects of such explosions to maximise the safety of passengers, infrastructure and transport vehicles.
