21st August 2023

QUT will showcase its commitment to sustainability from August 21-25 with  sustainability-focused events and activities at its Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses

Now in its third year, QUT Sustainability Week is a chance for the QUT community to learn more about sustainability and how they can engage with sustainable practices on and off campus.

In 2023, the inaugural ‘Festival of Sustainability’ will be hosted at Gardens Point campus (August 22) and Kelvin Grove campus (August 24), giving students, staff and the community access to markets, workshops, research panels and more.

Interactive tours of the QUT Solar and Central Energy Plant and the Cross River Rail Experience Centre will give festival-goers an up-close look at some of the biggest sustainability projects happening across Brisbane.

The festival will embed sustainability practices, with reusable plates and cutlery supplied to support the festival’s waste-free mandate.

Dr Rebecca Huntley

Renowned author and researcher Dr Rebecca Huntley will provide a keynote address on Wednesday 23 August, encouraging the students, academics and staff at QUT to respond to the climate crisis in  their personal and professional lives.

“I will look at my own journey towards addressing the climate crisis in my own work and explore the essential role of universities in tackling the complex problem that is climate change, showing how we have the power individually and collectively to move us from despair to hope,” Dr Huntley said.

Professor Kerrie Wilson

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability and Research Integrity) Professor Kerrie Wilson said the week was an opportunity for students, staff and the community to consider their impact on the earth, and better understand how they can become more sustainable.

The week celebrates our sustainability successes in research, on-campus activities and in our personal lives,” Professor Wilson said.

“QUT is committed to pursuing sustainability through research and education offerings that explore the environmental, social, economic, cultural and legal dimensions of sustainability.”

A full list of events and sessions can be found on the QUT Sustainability Week website.
