What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this research is to find out the perspectives and experiences of young people from culturally diverse and migrant backgrounds about citizenship and citizenship education.

Are you looking for people like me?

The research team is inviting young people who:

  • identify as belonging to a culturally diverse and migrant background; and
  • are currently aged between 18-25 years.

What will you ask me to do?

Participation involves:

  • a short online demographic diversity questionnaire (about 5 minutes to complete); and
  • two face-to-face focus groups at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Each focus group will take about 90 minutes, during which you will co-analyse research data and share your perspectives on citizenship and citizenship education. A feedback form is completed at the end of the focus groups.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

The research team has identified the following possible risks in relation to participating in this study:

  • low level discomfort due to sharing experiences/perspectives about citizenship, citizenship education and/or migration with others during focus groups. There is also a possibility of a disclosure of traumatic experiences of citizenship related to the research participants' migration experiences
  • low level discomfort due to the themes/topics that may arise in the focus groups
  • inconvenience as a result of the time taken to participate in the focus group.

It should be noted that if you do agree to participate you can withdraw from participation in the research project without comment or penalty.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is expected that this research project will not benefit you directly. However, school-aged students, their families, and communities may benefit from the findings of this study in the future through the new insights provided about CE from culturally diverse and migrant youth perspectives.

Will I be compensated for my time?

To recognise your contribution should you choose to participate, the research team is offering a voucher for Dymocks books and gifts, JB Hi-Fi or Officeworks (valued at $20) for each completed focus group.

I am interested - what should I do next?
