Overview
Auslan is the sign language used by the Australian Deaf community. New technologies have the potential to support Deaf people in a wide variety of ways, including:
- translating information into Auslan
- recognising Auslan signing
- providing resources and tools to support Auslan learners.
But these technologies should be designed in partnership with the Deaf community, who are the native users and custodians of the language.
This project offers opportunities for students to explore the intersections of technology and sign languages. Specific topics should be discussed with Dr Korte before applying.
Research activities
Exact research activities will depend on the student's interests and choice of project, and would generally include some or all of the following:
- Literature review
- Commercial product comparison and/or evaluation
- Data collection
- Technology development, across a wide variety of technologies
- Analysis
- Report writing
- Oral presentations.
Outcomes
- Student theses
- Publications
- Prototype technologies
Skills and experience
Students should have technical skills relevant to the technologies they are interested in exploring.
Familiarity with Auslan and Deaf culture would be viewed positively.
Students with relevant lived experience are encouraged to apply.
