Details

Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship) prepares you for professional leadership as teacher-librarians in primary and secondary schools. QUT is one of only three universities in Australia offering a professionally accredited course which will provide you with a teacher-librarianship qualification.

Discipline units focus on the role of the school library and the teacher-librarian, learning through engaging with contemporary texts, designing library spaces and cataloguing, classification, and database design. Teacher-Librarianship will extend your knowledge of learning through using Web 2.0 and information and communication technology, critical evaluation and selection of children’s literature, and inquiry-based learning, guided inquiry and information literacy. You will have access to excellent library services for the duration of your course.

Situated Professional Practice: Practicum

The Teacher-Librarianship course enables you to work alongside teacher-librarians at a practicum. The practicum provides 60 hours of on-site activity in library locations and opportunities to engage in authentic, real-world learning, which will enable you to reflect on current professional practices, apply critical thinking and problem solving, and make connections between theory and practice.

Career outcomes

You may be eligible for employment in school libraries or in other sectors of library and information work. To practise as a teacher-librarian in Australian schools, graduates also need approved teaching qualifications.

Professional affiliations

The study area is currently accredited by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and graduates are eligible for associate (professional) membership of ALIA.

The Master of Education (Teacher-Librarianship) maintains close links with the Australian School Library Association.

Units

As international students on a student visa can only study internally, Teacher-Librarianship, which is only offered externally, is not available to them.
