If you're considering a science degree and weighing up your options before finalising your QTAC preferences, one question is worth asking:
How important is hands-on experience to you?
At QUT, the Bachelor of Science goes beyond lectures and textbooks. From practical laboratory work and field experiences to industry engagement and research opportunities, you'll build skills in environments that reflect the work of professional scientists.
For example, our environmental science students go to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, where they apply critical thinking to choose meaningful sampling locations, use field techniques to collect and test water, and work directly with O’Reilly’s staff to understand the site’s water challenges.
Gain experience while you study
As a Bachelor of Science student, you'll have opportunities to apply your knowledge to real-world challenges through authentic scientific investigations, industry projects and hands-on learning experiences.
QUT student Haylee uncovered a prehistoric crocodile tooth during an outback internship with the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History.
Depending on your interests, you could contribute to projects involving:
- A two-day overnight field trip to Springbrook
- Exploring how biochemical pathways and processes can be applied to solve industry problems
- Restoring the Great Barrier Reef using an underwater coral glue
- A disaster simulation exercise at the State Disaster Coordination Centre (SDCC)
- Paid vacation research experiences during summer study breaks
Explore emerging areas of science
From 2027, you can choose from a new biotechnology major alongside existing study areas, including biological sciences, chemistry, climate science, earth science, environmental science, and physics.
Did you know you don’t have to choose your specialisation until you’re well into your first year of study? This flexibility lets you build foundational skills and tailor your degree around the areas of science that inspire you most.
Work alongside researchers
If you're interested in research, QUT offers opportunities to get involved beyond the classroom. Eligible students can participate in the Vacation Research Experience Scheme (VRES), a paid research program that provides experience working alongside active researchers on real projects.
As science student Zoe approached the final semester of her undergraduate degree, she found herself at a crossroads, unsure of her future path. That's when she stumbled upon the QUT Vacation Research Experience Scheme (VRES), where she ended up delving into the fascinating world of marine science.
