Research on study abroad and exchange
There are 3 ways that you can come and complete one or two semesters of your research degree with us:
- participate in our exchange program (if you come from one of our partner institutions)
- participate in Study Abroad (if you don't study at one of our partner institutions)
- study a Joint PhD
- come and research as an occupational trainee.
Exchange Program
We need to have an International Cooperation Agreement with your institution, which outlines:
- how long you can stay on exchange
- how many students will participate in exchange.
Contact QUT International to find out if your university has an International Cooperation Agreement with us.
Study Abroad
If you don't study at a partner institution, you can still come and research with us, but you may have to pay international student fees.
How to apply

You'll need a supervisor while you're researching with us.

What happens next?
We'll notify you if your application is successful or not.
If your application is successful, we'll send you an offer letter. Once you've accepted your offer, you can start preparing to come and research with us. When you arrive, you'll need to contact QUT International to organise you enrolment.
Joint PhD
You may be able to complete a Joint PhD studying at both QUT and another leading university overseas. You must study at least one year at each institution. When you complete your degree, you'll receive recognition from both universities.
If you are interested in this option please discuss it with your potential supervisor and refer to the PhD Regulations for further information.
Research with us as an occupational trainee
You can come and research with us, undertaking laboratory work on a research project, and earn credit towards your home degree without enrolling as a student. You'll be considered a junior visiting staff member, and won't have access to student concessions.
You'll need to apply for an occupational trainee visa.
