Reconciling competing perspectives of mathematics in teacher education
This project explores how pre-service teachers experience and reconcile competing conceptions of mathematics, such as mathematics as a formal discipline versus a pedagogical practice. These tensions can shape teaching approaches and classroom environments. The project will investigate how teacher education programs influence these perspectives and how pre-service teachers develop coherent professional identities.

Elucidating the gas-phase reactivity and photochemistry of halide anions
Bromine and iodine are suspected to be responsible for most of the halogen-induced ozone loss in the stratosphere but are not currently included in atmospheric models due to a paucity of knowledge of the gas-phase chemistry and photochemistry of their anions and radicals. This project will develop and deploy advanced mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy techniques to enable precision measurements of the reactions and photo- reactions of gas-phase iodide and bromide anions and their oxides. These state-of-the-art measurements of reaction kinetics and …

Considering economics when prioritising species conservation
There are limited funds available for saving threatened species globally. Investing that money wisely can help ecologists and the government achieve more bang for their buck, and help more species and ecosystems. We can use many approaches to help guide those investment decisions, including mathematical optimisation and operations research. However better considerations of economic factors are needed in order to reflect the complexity of real ecosystems and governments.

Providing legal evidence for non-accidental scald burn injury
Although most burn injuries are completely accidental in nature, they can also occur due to neglect or abuse. Burn clinicians are often required to ascertain if the patient history and the wound are consistent with accidental or non-accidental injury. If the case goes to court, the clinician will prepare a medico-legal report as evidence. We have previously conducted studies examining the depth of burn injury after different durations and temperatures of hot water. This data can be used to predict …

Modelling the osteoid: A quantitative experimental–mathematical platform for osteocyte network formation and transport
Project Reference: #4MPQC-NATP3Preferred Project Start: Late 2026/Early 2027How does a newly formed bone matrix develop into a mineralised tissue containing a functional osteocyte network, and how does this transformation affect the movement of nutrients and signals?During bone formation, osteoblasts produce a soft, initially unmineralised extracellular matrix known as osteoid. Some osteoblasts gradually become embedded within this matrix and transition into osteocytes, extending dendritic processes that connect them into an intricate three-dimensional network. As the osteoid matures and mineralises, its architecture, …

Joint PhD QUT/Münster: Digital innovation in battery energy storage systems
Queensland is a global leader in residential solar photovoltaic adoption, yet battery energy storage uptake is comparatively low, constraining the full potential of decentralised battery energy storage systems (BESS). Similarly, in Germany, battery storage adoption remains limited and regionally concentrated, despite strong national policy support and technological advances in battery manufacturing. This project investigates the behavioural and systemic barriers to BESS adoption and explores how digital solutions can influence energy decisions. It forms part of a broader international collaboration between QUT, …

Artificial intelligence (AI) to balance fluctuations of intermittent renewable energy sources
Artificial intelligence (AI) can play a significant role in analyzing and predicting energy consumption and production patterns from renewable sources such as solar and wind (Lyu & Liu 2021). This is particularly important due to the key challenge of intermittency, where major renewable sources for electricity, such as solar and wind, are subject to the inconsistencies of the weather (Watson et al., 2022).In this project, we investigate how AI and machine learning algorithms can optimize smart grids and other components …

Estimating the evolutionary history of plasmids and viruses
In the case of cellular life - bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes - determining the 'tree of life' is a comparatively well-studied problem. This vertical evolutionary history can be estimated using concatenated gene phylogenies, where single copy marker genes are concatenated into a single multiple sequence alignment which is then used in a phylogenetic tree reconstruction algorithm.Viral genomes and plasmid sequences, meanwhile, are more challenging to fit into a phylogenetic framework.

Parameter identifiability for stochastic processes in biological systems
Stochastic models are used in biology to account for inherent randomness in many cellular processes, for example gene regulatory networks. Noise is often thought to obscure information, however, there is an increasing understanding that some randomness contains vitally important information about underlying biological processes. When applying these models to interpret and learn from data, unknown parameters in the model need to be estimated. However, not all data will contribute to a given estimation task regardless of the data quantity and quality. …

Big Data ideas for GLMs
The goal of this project is to develop new Bayesian methods for large-scale data analysis using subsampling techniques. The focus of the project will be on generalised linear models (GLMs), which are commonly used models in statistics and machine learning. One of the main challenges in using Bayesian statistics with big data is the high computational cost associated with processing big datasets. The proposed project aims to address this challenge by developing new subsampling techniques for Piecewise Deterministic Markov Process (PDMP) …

Synergic identification of prestress force, moving force and interfacial force for corroborative substructural modelling
We are looking for an appropriate PhD candidate working for a recently awarded ARC Discovery Project. The PhD candidate will work on the further improvement of the previously developed Synergic identification of prestress force [1] and moving force applying to continuous supported prestressed concrete bridges using regularisation techniques [2-7] and corroborative substructural modelling.

Investigating immunosuppression downstream of activated FGFR2 in endometrial cancer
FGFR2 encodes two alternatively spliced isoforms that differ in their ligand binding domain and the combination of tissue specific expression of these isoforms and tissue specific expression of the FGF ligands is the foundation of normal paracrine signalling. Isoform switching from FGFR2b (inclusion of exon 8) to FGFR2c (inclusion of exon 9) occurs in tumorigenesis as it establishes an autocrine loop in epithelial cancer cells. Our lab has reported that FGFR2 activation by mutations or isoform switching is associated with …
