Scott Layton doesn’t hold a bachelor’s degree, yet he’s well on his way to completing QUT’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) thanks to QUT’s flexible pathway options.
“The growth I’ve experienced, both personally and professionally, has been beyond what I ever imagined,” said Scott. Initially, he didn’t start out with a plan to complete a masters — he was simply seeking personal growth. However, he’s very thankful he took the plunge, saying “I think back now and wonder, why didn’t I do this sooner?”
Scott’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and professional growth. For anyone unsure if executive education is right for them, his story serves as a compelling reminder that it’s never too late to learn and transform.
From self-doubt to determination
For years, Scott toyed with the idea of formal professional development, but self-doubt held him back. Without a bachelor’s degree and with a young family to support, along with his wife undertaking postgraduate studies, he wasn’t sure he could balance higher education alongside his other responsibilities. To put it plainly, Scott admits he “had no desire to study”.
When asked why, he said, “I didn’t think I had the time, and I wasn’t sure I’d be good enough,”.
“But deep down, I wanted to become a better version of myself”.
What began as hesitation eventually transformed into a life-changing journey — one that’s still reshaping not only Scott’s confidence but also his career.

Taking the first step
For Scott, the turning point came during a career development conversation with his manager. “I thought I needed to improve certain skills, but my manager told me I had those covered and challenged me to push myself further,” he recalls. Together, they mapped out areas for growth that would take him out of his comfort zone.
The challenge came in the form of specific postgraduate units. Scott initially found the idea of doing formal study daunting, but found QUT had a great solution that helped him ease into postgraduate study. “I didn’t know if I’d be able to balance study with everything else in my life,” said Scott. “But I was determined to grow, and there were several units from QUT’s Enterprise Leadership Program (ELP) that perfectly aligned with what I was looking for.”
At that time, Scott had no intention of completing the entire ELP.
“It wasn’t about getting a specific qualification,” he said.
“It was about proving to myself that I could do it — that I could succeed at that level of study.”
He believes starting small made all the difference to his study path, as those first units laid the foundation for a much larger transformation, both personally and professionally.
“I’m not going to lie, though, — it wasn’t easy,” he said with a smile.
“However, thanks to meticulous planning and support from various QUT staff, I’m proud to say I completed those units and more.”
Not only did Scott complete the original units he enrolled in, but upon realising he had the skills to thrive in a program like the ELP, he went on to complete the full program and earn a Graduate Certificate in Business (Enterprise Leadership). During that time, he caught ‘the bug’ and discovered just how much he enjoyed the learning process. He also began to see the potential for further growth.
A conversation with Aleesha Ware, QUT’s MBA Program Manager, helped solidify his decision. She outlined the seamless professional pathway from the Graduate Certificate to the MBA and other QUT postgraduate qualifications, showing him how he could build on his achievements without starting from scratch. Inspired by this guidance and his own success, Scott decided to take the next step and enrol in an MBA.
One MBA, many pathways
Scott is not alone in transitioning from a Graduate Certificate to an MBA. Aleesha noted, “The most common pathway into an MBA is through the Graduate Certificate in Business (Enterprise Leadership) or the Graduate Certificate in Business Administration.”
“This route is perfect for those who might not have a formal undergraduate degree or who completed their studies many years ago, perhaps without achieving the required GPA.”
She added, “Associates love this pathway because they can study alongside fellow MBA students without needing to take extra units, and it doesn’t exclude people from non-traditional educational or professional backgrounds.”
As you might imagine, these diverse entry methods bring together associates from a wide range of industries, backgrounds and experiences.
“We see so many different kinds of people coming through our program,” Aleesha said.
“Tradespeople, parents who have taken time out of the workforce and want to level up their business skills, long-time business owners, health professionals, and creatives join our program alongside corporate leaders.
“This diversity enriches everyone’s experience and creates an inclusive professional development environment.
“Associates learn just as much from each other as they do from the curriculum.”

Professional growth in action
Despite having over 20 years of experience in learning and capability development in global and large public sector organisations, Scott found both his ELP and MBA studies did more than just help him achieve his personal growth dreams. “The biggest impact for me has been how I show up at work,” he said. “I’m using different language, bringing new perspectives, and tackling challenges with a confidence I didn’t have before.”
One standout moment for Scott occurred during a meeting with senior colleagues, where he introduced a new framework he had studied in one of his MBA units.
“I remember explaining the model but thinking it was something my senior colleagues would be all over,” he recalled with a laugh.
“When they said they were unfamiliar with the framework, I realised I’d brought something completely new to the table,” he said.
“It felt incredible to have that kind of positive impact.”
Scott didn’t start this journey hoping for a promotion or a title.
“I did it to challenge myself and grow,” he said.
“Now, I feel like I’m bringing the best version of myself to everything I do.”
Unlocking future possibilities
Scott also acknowledges the ripple effect his personal and professional growth has had on those around him.
“At work, I think my team sees me approaching challenges with more confidence and creativity, and that has an impact,” he said.
“In many ways, I’ve had a back-of-house role in some very visible projects over the years.
“But now, I’m deliberately taking on a larger and much more prominent leadership role on those kinds of projects.”
With a smile, he adds, “And at home, I hope my daughter sees that learning and growth don’t stop when school ends.”
As he looks toward completing his MBA degree and beyond, Scott remains focused on growth, not just as a leader but as a lifelong learner.
“The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that it’s never too late to start,” said Scott.
“Every step forward is a step worth taking”.
When asked what he’d say to others who are hesitant to pursue further education, he said, “If you’re thinking about it, just take the first step.”
“You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.”
