When you study science, information technology (IT), data science, mathematics, and game development at QUT, you have access to a wealth of resources and support services. These range from general student support, like free counselling, health services, and 24/7 library access, to specialised academic programs, high-tech facilities, student clubs, and industry-linked opportunities tailored to each discipline. Let’s explore what's available to help you succeed in your studies!
Comprehensive student support for all QUT students
No matter what you study, you’re never alone in your journey. QUT provides a safe and supportive community that helps you thrive academically and personally.
Every student has access to free, confidential counselling and mental health support, on-campus medical clinics with bulk-billed healthcare, and dedicated disability advisors. You’ll also find 24/7 access to libraries and computer labs for those late-night study sessions, plus student success coaches and even dedicated queer spaces for support and community.
STEM support
Academic skills support is readily available through initiatives like QUT’s Student Success team. For example, QUT offers STEM-focused drop-in sessions (part of the award-winning STIMulate program ) where you can bring any study-related questions and get help from trained tutors and Peer Learning Facilitators.
In these collaborative sessions, you can get assistance with everything from web design and coding (JavaScript, Python, C++, PHP) to scientific report writing or tricky concepts in biology, chemistry, and math. It’s a welcoming, informal environment to ask questions, work through problems, and pick up study tips – whether you need help debugging code or understanding a math formula.
These services not only help you master course content but also connect you with fellow students so you can learn together (and pick up some great study buddies!).

Clubs, competitions & campus life
QUT places a strong emphasis on learning beyond the classroom, encouraging students to connect with peers and pursue their passions through clubs, competitions, and industry events.
In fact, with more than 120 student-led clubs and societies on campus, you can find a group for nearly every interest – academic, professional, cultural, or just for fun.
Joining a club is a great way to make friends, network, and build skills. For example, tech-savvy students often join Code Network, a student-run coding and IT club. Code Network hosts regular meetups and the popular QUT Winter Hackathon, where teams of students spend a weekend building innovative software projects and presenting them to industry judges. Likewise, aspiring game developers can join the QUT Game Development Club, which brings together creatives and coders to collaborate on making games.
Students in science and maths have their own active communities, too. Groups like the QUT Environmental Science Club and QUT Mathematics Society organise events such as science trivia nights, peer study sessions, and networking mixers with researchers or alumni.
Can’t find a club that fits your interests? Start your own! QUT provides support through the QUT Guild to help new student groups get off the ground.
Looking to build your confidence and leadership skills? QUT also offers Peer Leader Training, which prepares students to support and guide their peers across a range of university programs and activities. Through the training, students develop communication, teamwork, mentoring and leadership skills while gaining valuable experience that can be applied both during university and in their future careers. It's a great way to make connections, contribute to the student community and strengthen your resume while you study.
Scholarships, mentorship and networking
QUT also offers generous scholarships and mentorship programs to support high-achieving and underrepresented students in STEM fields.
A notable example is the Women in Science, Mathematics and IT Merit Scholarship, an initiative launched to encourage women in those disciplines by providing $7,500 over three years. Eligible students are automatically considered when they apply to QUT.
You could also be selected for the Faculty of Science Dean's Scholars Program, the faculty's premier leadership and professional development initiative. Each year, a select cohort of high-achieving students from science, data science, mathematics, IT, and games and interactive environments are chosen based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to community engagement.
As a Dean's Scholar, you'll take part in workshops, mentoring, industry site visits, and networking events with leaders from companies like Google, Deloitte, CSIRO, DETSI, Compnow and TechnologyOne . These connections give you a chance to meet mentors, secure internships or work experience, and stay updated on emerging trends in your field.
QUT’s support ecosystem is designed to help you succeed in your journey in science, IT, data science, mathematics, or game development.
You’ll benefit from comprehensive student services that take care of your well-being and academic skills, world-class labs and technology that bring learning to life, vibrant student clubs and competitions that enrich your university life, and strong industry partnerships to kickstart your career.
With all these resources and support services at your fingertips, you can confidently pursue your passion, enjoy your study experience at QUT and make the most of the opportunities that will help you get ready for an exciting future!
