About

Every successful IT system starts with thoughtful design. This unit introduces the principles and techniques for designing modern IT systems that meet user and organisational needs.

You will create a front-end app design using user-centred interface design principles and explore backend system design through system architecture, APIs, cloud hosting and data processing concepts.

Using familiar real-world systems as examples, you will learn how design ideas are represented, communicated and refined through prototypes, modelling and a backend system design proposal.

Overview

  • You will learn how IT systems are planned and designed to meet user needs.
  • You will create a front-end app design using human-computer interaction and user-centred design principles.
  • You will explore low, medium and high-fidelity approaches to user interface design.
  • You will explore key aspects of backend systems design, including system structure, architecture, APIs, cloud hosting, and data processing.
  • You will apply design principles and techniques to investigate and develop solutions to real-world problems.
  • You may be required to undertake pre-readings prior to the intensive program in preparation for your project activities.

Learning objectives

In this unit, you will learn how IT systems designers:

  • analyse user needs and translate them into system requirements and design ideas for real-world problems
  • apply human-computer interaction and user-centred design principles, including low, medium and high-fidelity approaches, to collaboratively create a front-end app design
  • describe backend system structure and architecture using design representations, including FMC diagrams
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of professionals involved in IT systems design and development.
