About the scholarship
Health AI is being adopted across health services at unprecedented speed and scale. Early evidence suggests gains in efficiency and clinician experience, but most evaluations to date are task-level, cross-sectional snapshots. They measure one tool at one point in the workflow. Much less is known about how these technologies change work across the whole care process, including downstream effects on other clinicians, patients, information flow and safety.
This PhD project will examine the system-level impact of health AI, using human factors and systems approaches to trace its effects end to end across clinical processes. For example, rather than measuring documentation time alone, the project may examine how AI scribes reshape the full workflow, from consultation through note review and sign-off to referrals, follow-up, and patient communication. Findings will inform the safe, sustainable adoption and integration of AI technologies in health services.
The candidate will be supervised by Professor Amina Tariq and co-supervised by Professor Belinda Lange. You will join the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Human Factors and AI-enabled Clinical Decision Support. This national collaboration brings together QUT, the University of Sydney, Macquarie University and the University of the Sunshine Coast with partners including Queensland Health, NSW Health and the Australian Digital Health Agency. You will also take part in the CRE Student Community of Practice, human factors methods workshops and as required cross-university co-supervision.
