What you'll receive

An annual stipend paid fortnightly, indexed annually to support living costs. From 1 January 2024, the annual stipend rate is $32,192 (AUD) (full-time rate):

Domestic students receive a Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset funded by the Australian Government.

International students receive a QUT Tuition Fee Sponsorship.

Eligibility

Applicants need to be able to::

  • meet QUT’s admission criteria for a research degree, which includes meeting QUT’s English language requirements
  • be able to commit to full-time, internal enrolment, with commencement in 2024.

In additional, the ideal applicant will possess or be able to demonstrate:

  • a master degree (or equivalent) in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related discipline
  • a strong background in data science, machine learning, statistical analysis, or a relevant field
  • proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or similar, for data manipulation, analysis, and modelling
  • familiarity with data management tools and techniques for handling large-scale datasets
  • experience in working with sensor data or time-series data is desirable
  • solid understanding of machine learning algorithms, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques
  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to derive meaningful insights from complex datasets
  • excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for presenting research findings and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively
  • a demonstrated publication record (or potential) in peer-reviewed conferences or journals would be viewed as advantageous.

The first step is to email Professor Ashish Bhaskar detailing your academic and research background, your motivation to research in this field and interest in this scholarship, and include your CV.

If supported to apply, you will then submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) following the advice at how to apply for a research degree.

In your EOI, nominate Prof Ashish Bhaskar as your proposed principal supervisor, and copy the link to this scholarship website into question 2 of the financial details section.

About the scholarship

The project aims to the explore concept of empathic machines in the context of driver monitoring systems (DMS) and automated driving. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing the understanding of driver engagement, situation awareness, and risk through leveraging advancements in data science techniques on vehicle sensor, DMS, and other related datasets.

The outcome of this research is expected to be used by the industry partners and will have a direct impact on the state of the art and practice in DMS.
