Step 3: Check you meet the entry requirements

You need to meet specific entry requirements to get into each of our degrees. Entry requirements are usually based on previous study or professional experience.

Check your course information for entry requirements.

I completed my previous study overseas

We'll assess your qualifications when you submit your application.

You need to provide:

  • a certified copy of your academic transcripts
  • the grading scale of your university (this may be on the back page of your transcript).

If the documents are in a language other than English, you must also provide an official English translation.

English proficiency requirements

To assess your English language proficiency, we accept test results from:

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
  • Cambridge English : Proficiency (CPE)

You must take your proficiency test no more than 2 years before the start of your course.

How do I find my English language requirements?

You can find the English language requirements for your course in the course information.

You can also consult the language requirements for research courses.

QUT IELTS Test Centre

If you are in Australia, you can complete the IELTS proficiency exam at our IELTS test centre.

If you are registering for a TOEFL test, you can organise to send your results directly to us. Our TOEFL institution code is 9778.

I want to do a PhD, but I don't meet the entry requirements

If you meet the entry requirements for a masters by research degree, you may be able to start your masters degree and then upgrade to a PhD after 12 months through the confirmation process.

You can also discuss your qualifications with your potential supervisor. If you can demonstrate that your qualifications are equivalent to the requirements (check our guidelines for determining H1 and H2A equivalence (PDF file, 111.03 KB)), your application may be considered for entry into a PhD, as long as this is supported by your faculty and approved by the Research Degrees Committee.
