Building a Black Justice Journalism

Overview

This interdisciplinary project argues for a new form of scholarly journalism, grounded in conceptions of Black Justice, as a critical intervention needed to address the ongoing media misreporting of Indigenous affairs. It will interrogate the field of journalism ethics, arguing that accepted norms of journalistic practice compound harm and restrict the voices of Black Witnesses. In doing so, it will aim to build an ethics of practice in the form of Black Justice Journalism which will be disseminated to the Indigenous media sector.

Research engagement

An article in the tradition of Black Justice Journalism.

Research activities

Students will research stories, pitch ideas, collate news clippings (media monitoring) and write their own piece for potential publication.

Research skills

Gain hands on experience in Indigenous Australian led research. Develop an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies as it relates to their discipline

Outcomes

Enhance their employment prospects, inspire them to pursue higher research degrees and contribute to the development of knowledge in their areas of interest

Skills and experience

Have an interest in Black Justice Journalism and developing an understanding of Critical Indigenous Studies including Indigenist research methodologies.
