Biography
My research focuses on understanding and harnessing microbial processes for sustainable water and environmental management. I am currently a Research Fellow in Microbial Ecology and Wastewater Microbiology at the Water Innovation and Smart Environments Laboratory (WISE Lab), Queensland University of Technology (QUT), working with Prof Yang Liu.
I completed my PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering at The University of Queensland in 2024, where my research revealed novel metabolic pathways of methane- and nitrous oxide-transforming microorganisms, including anaerobic methanotrophs (ANME) and anammox bacteria. Following my PhD, I worked at the Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB), contributing to industry-linked projects on innovative wastewater biotechnologies.
With a multidisciplinary background spanning environmental chemistry, geochemistry, and microbiology, my research integrates molecular biology, isotope tracing, and advanced meta-omics approaches to elucidate microbe–environment interactions. I have extensive experience collaborating with industry partners such as Urban Utilities and the Australian Pork industry on greenhouse gas emission mitigation and wastewater treatment optimisation. My current work explores microbial mechanisms underpinning nutrient removal and the transformation of emerging contaminants such as PFAS in engineered systems, aiming to develop next-generation biotechnologies for circular water and resource recovery.
