From virtual reality adventures and puzzle games to interactive storytelling experiences, QUT games students work in teams to bring their ideas to life. Along the way, they develop the same skills used by professional game studios: collaboration, problem-solving, creativity and technical expertise.

Learning by making

Game development is more than writing code.

Students in the Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments can specialise in areas such as game design, animation, and software technologies. Throughout their studies, they work on projects that mirror professional industry practices, combining creative thinking with technical skills to create experiences people genuinely want to play.

One example is Game Studio 2, where students work in teams to develop a game based on an industry-style brief. The experience helps students understand how professional development teams collaborate, test ideas and deliver projects under real-world conditions.

Play student-made games

From classroom idea to playable game

Some students arrive at QUT with a passion for games but little experience creating them.

Throughout the degree, students build practical portfolios that showcase their skills to future employers. For some students, this means developing immersive virtual reality experiences. For others, it's designing original game worlds, creating animations or programming gameplay systems.

Student-created projects have included everything from collaborative VR experiences to original indie-style games that prospective students, industry guests, and the public can play.

Real industry experience

Every Bachelor of Games and Interactive Environments student completes a year-long industry project before graduating. Working alongside industry partners gives students the opportunity to tackle real challenges while building professional networks.

The experience culminates in the annual IT and Games Showcase, where students present their projects to industry representatives, academics, friends and family. Previous showcases have involved more than 200 students and dozens of industry partners, creating valuable opportunities for feedback, networking and career development.
