EUN106 English, Language and Literacies 1

Unit synopsis

This unit provides foundation understandings, skills and processes for studying English, language and literacies in the Early Years Learning Framework and Primary English Curriculum. In this unit you will engage with current research about how young children learn language, literacies and English disciplinary content, including phonics, spelling, vocabulary, speaking (oral language), listening and reading. You will study theories of language acquisition and literacy learning in order to consider ways of understanding how young children learn to communicate and make meaning. Strategies for assessing these aspects of literacy will also be explored. The unit supports the development of understandings that will be crucial for your future studies of writing, handwriting, grammar, and multimodal design in EUN201 English, Language and Literacies 2.  The unit enables you to build informed opinions about important themes and policies related to English, langugage and literacies, and to practise articulating these opinions professionally.
