QUT Disability Services

Where do I start?

The first step is to make an appointment with a disability adviser to discuss your university journey and the adjustments you may require during your studies. Disability advisers are available on both campuses, and appointments can be in person, by phone, by Zoom/Skype or via the National Relay Service.

Make contact early – preferably prior to or in your first weeks of study. You can contact our reception staff in person or by phone or email. Let them know which faculty you are studying in, or plan to study in, so they can book you in with the disability adviser for your faculty.

Disclosing your disability, injury or health condition

The information you provide will not appear on your academic record. It is kept confidentially with Disability Services and will not be made available to others without your permission (except where required by law e.g. to preserve health or safety).

What can I expect at my first appointment?

During your initial meeting with a disability adviser you will have the opportunity talk about any concerns and questions you have about your studies.

You will also be able to discuss any concerns that you may have about the impact of your disability, injury or health condition on your studies, and the type of reasonable adjustments that could be put in place to assist.

There is no cost for appointments with a disability adviser.

Who is eligible for services?

Students who contact Disability Services may have a disability, injury or health condition. These include, but are not limited to physical, neurological and mental health conditions; learning disabilities; and mobility issues.

Disability Services is available to all students – domestic or international, internal or external. This includes students enrolled at QUT College.

If you have any health concern that impacts on your studies, you are welcome to enquire with the service and make an appointment to consult with a disability adviser.

Supporting documentation

You will need to provide current and suitable supporting documentation to be eligible to receive adjustments. This will help our disability advisers to determine what adjustments are appropriate for your situation. If you are not sure what documentation you need to provide, please get in touch and Disability Services can provide some guidance.

What adjustments are available?

Each student’s adjustments will be unique to their study environment and requirements.

A few examples of adjustments are:

  • adaptive equipment (and training if required)
  • Auslan interpreter services
  • captioning
  • access to Assistive Technology Labs
  • alternative formatting
  • provision of and training in assistive software.

International students

If you are an international applicant with a disability, injury or health condition you will be asked to review and attach an early indication of support needs questionnaire and information sheet with your application.

Early indication of support needs questionnaire (PDF file, 74.5 KB)

Information sheet (PDF file, 573.9 KB)

Please complete the questionnaire and information sheet declaration and attach in the “Support Services” section of your application.

Additional time may be required to process your application as it is necessary to discuss the support and adjustments that may be required for your disability, injury or health condition before you are able to commence your studies.
