Why I chose QUT
I decided to pursue my studies at QUT because of its renowned reputation and well-structured units. Hearing positive feedback from former QUT students further solidified my choice. As someone who valued hands-on experience over pure theory, I was pleased to discover that QUT emphasised practical learning. This approach not only enhanced understanding but also provided a glimpse into the real-world challenges awaiting graduates.
I recommended QUT to prospective students due to the university’s vibrant and diverse community, both among students and staff. All the lecturers and tutors were willing to help with any enquiries we had, and the assignments we completed during our course were useful when pursuing our professional careers.
Tailoring my studies through elective units
One aspect of my course that I particularly enjoyed was the range of elective options offered. These electives allowed students to tailor their studies according to their desired professional environment. For instance, I opted for a course on Entertainment Marketing in a Digital World, aligning with my interest in the influence of social media on the marketing industry. I found this elective incredibly valuable and foresaw its applicability in my future endeavours.
How practical learning in marketing helped me
As an international student, 'real world' to me encompassed life after university, navigating the job market, and figuring out my desired path in life. Moving halfway across the world on my own, without knowing anyone, was a defining journey that significantly contributed to my personal development and exploration of unfamiliar environments.
In the context of my marketing course, the 'real world' aspect lay in the structured units that immersed us in the practical learning of actual companies. Through detailed insights into company structures and operations, we gained a tangible sense of what it was like to work for these companies. This hands-on experience not only enhanced our understanding of the industry but also equipped us with invaluable skills and knowledge that were directly applicable in our future careers after graduating from university.
Making friends on campus
Making friends on campus was an enriching experience for me, and I found that engaging in various societies was the most effective way to connect with like-minded individuals. Attending university society events not only allowed me to meet people who shared similar interests but also provided an opportunity to bond with others who were seeking friendships.
As a member of the executive team at the Society of Entrepreneurs, I had the pleasure of networking alongside some fantastic individuals. Not only did I find valuable friendships within the society, but I also enjoyed our collaborative efforts. Interacting with a diverse range of students and assisting them in understanding our society contributed to overcoming my social anxiety. Additionally, volunteering at QUT Connect was immensely rewarding. It not only allowed me to support new students during their first year at university but also introduced me to incredible individuals whom I cherished every day.
Why I chose Brisbane
I was drawn to Brisbane for various reasons, all of which contributed to my decision to study there. Coming from Bulgaria, a relatively small country, I was immediately impressed by Brisbane. The city enjoyed good weather year-round, a welcome change from the gloomy climate I experienced during my first year of university in London. Additionally, Brisbane offered the perfect balance of being a city of decent size, bustling with activities, yet not overwhelmingly busy. However, what truly stood out to me about Brisbane was its location. It was very close to the beautiful beaches of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, as well as easily accessible mountains and hiking trails, making it convenient for day trips.
