The Standard Foundation Program at QUT College has provided me with theoretical and English skills to progress into my Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree at QUT. I enjoyed studying at QUT College as it enabled me to interact with students from different cultures in a dynamic and diverse learning environment.

I chose to study at QUT as the university is committed to providing real-world experiences and hands-on learning. Real-world to me means applying theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios through internships or projects, which I look forward to experiencing in my education degree.

Studying at the QUT College

I enjoyed studying at the college because of the supportive community and small class sizes. With a smaller number of students per class compared to university tutorials, it was easier for me to ask the tutors for personalised, differentiated feedback whenever I struggled with my assignments. Additionally, the College felt like a community where great tutors and staff were always approachable and willing to answer my questions.

Progression into university

Throughout the Standard Foundation Program, my academic skills improved a lot of thanks to constructive, targeted feedback from supportive tutors. I also learned how to cite academic sources properly and practised with academic readings confidently. Moreover, the structured program equipped me with effective research and note-taking skills, which are essential skills in my bachelor's degree that involves reviewing scholarly literature, curriculum and syllabus documents.

Learning through practical experience

As part of my Bachelor of Education degree, I have completed three placements across both state and independent secondary schools.  My first placement was already in my second semester of my first year and it was instrumental in shaping my journey as an aspiring teacher. Being in such real and diverse classroom environments helped me apply my disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical skills in practice, such as creating lesson plans, managing student behaviours, and providing differentiated learning activities that cater to learners’ needs.  The constructive feedback I received from supervising teachers and peers was invaluable, helping me to refine my teaching practices and grow as an educator.

Starting placements from the first year not only strengthened my commitment to a teaching career but also helped me develop the essential skills and qualities required to excel in this profession. I am grateful for this hands-on learning opportunity, which has laid a strong foundation for my future in education.

Furthermore, I volunteer as a Peer Learning Facilitator at the QUT Library Learning Hub, which gave me practical experience in improving my communication skills by helping fellow students unpack assessment items and guiding them through effective study strategies.

I highly appreciate QUT’s “real-world” learning with a highly structured study plan. The teaching program has linked coursework with practical professional experience in real life. Each placement unit offers clear goals and expectations, so I am aware of what standards I need to meet during my placement as a pre-service teacher.

Practical experience

Student life

At QUT College, I got the chance to make friends with classmates from around the world. We still keep in touch and in fact, a friend I met during my foundation year is still my study partner in our Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree that I am undertaking.

My future plans

Teaching has always been my goal and my dream, and I look forward to contributing my knowledge, skills and energy to support student success in Maths and English and help them feel confident in their learning. After gaining some teaching experience, I would like to progress into a Master of Education to deepen my pedagogical knowledge and prepare for future leadership roles as they arise.
