Technology has always inspired me, especially the ability to solve complex, real-world problems. Studying a Bachelor of Information Technology at QUT gave me the perfect platform to explore my areas of interest including AI, machine learning and software development. I wanted a degree that would challenge me intellectually and I am proud to say I made the right decision.

The QUT perks

The university’s strong industrial connections, teaching style and my course’s structure attracted me to QUT. I was also very drawn to Brisbane’s friendly and diverse environment. I was particularly inspired by the opportunity to be part of programs like the QUT College of Excellence and the Dean’s Scholars Program, which recognise high-achieving students and provide access to exclusive mentoring, networking, and leadership experiences.

My favourite part of my course has been the hands-on learning. From building machine learning models to securing networks, QUT constantly encouraged me to apply theory to practice. The access to cutting-edge technology, computing resources, and supportive lecturers made learning both exciting and rewarding. Collaborative projects and hackathons also gave me the chance to develop teamwork and leadership skills that I now use every day in my professional role.

Real-world projects

I’ve had the opportunity to apply my learning through both professional work and university-integrated projects so far. I’m currently completing my capstone project with TechnologyOne, one of Australia’s largest enterprise software companies. As the project manager, I’m working with a team to build a tool that uses AI, natural language processing, and AWS integration. This project has given me invaluable exposure to professional software development workflows, stakeholder communication, and industry expectations.

Working with TechnologyOne was genuinely fantastic. The team was really supportive throughout the entire project, and it gave me a lot of hands-on, real-world experience building a production-grade tool. TechnologyOne were really happy with the final product and the direction we took. It was a great opportunity to work directly with industry engineers and see how large-scale software teams operate.

During my internship at Geoimage, a leading satellite imaging company, I worked on automating geospatial data processing workflows and developing internal tools in Python that are now actively used across multiple teams. This experience allowed me to bridge theory with practice, collaborate with professionals, and directly contribute to imagery used by major clients. I now continue to work part-time at Geoimage as a Software Engineer, which has been an incredible extension of my studies.

To me, “real world” means being ready to create value from day one. I wasn't just taught theory but immersed in genuine scenarios where I had to think, act, and deliver like a professional. Whether it was presenting solutions to real clients, managing projects with industry mentors, or working in simulated enterprise environments, every experience felt practical and purpose driven.

A dynamic and hands-on course

What surprised me most about my course was how much freedom and creativity the course encourages. I found my course to be very dynamic, hands-on, and constantly evolving with new technologies. From building AI models and programming robots to collaborating with industry partners, there’s always an opportunity to experiment and innovate.

I was also surprised by how approachable the teaching staff are. They genuinely want you to succeed and often share real industry insights that help you see the bigger picture. The flexibility to tailor my degree with electives and projects that align with my interests has made my learning experience both personal and empowering. I have also connected with many industry professionals because of being involved in my course.

Scholarship support

I was honoured to receive the International Merit Scholarship, which provides a 25% tuition fee reduction for the entirety of my course. This scholarship has been an incredible support, allowing me to focus more on my studies and professional development without the financial pressure.

I also received an educational grant to attend the AWS Summit in Sydney as part of QUT’s recognition of academic excellence, and I’m proud to be part of the Dean’s Scholars Program, which celebrates high-achieving students. These opportunities have been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. Attending the AWS Summit allowed me to engage directly with industry leaders and gain valuable insights into emerging technologies, while the Dean’s Scholars Program connected me with inspiring peers and mentors who continually motivate me to strive for excellence. Together, these experiences have truly defined my QUT journey.

A real advantage in the workforce

I would highly recommend QUT to anyone looking for a university experience that’s both academically challenging and genuinely connected to the real world. The university’s strong industry partnerships, innovative teaching, and focus on employability give students a real advantage when entering the workforce.

What makes QUT even more special is its supportive community. From good lecturers and mentors to career guidance and scholarship opportunities, QUT truly invests in helping students succeed.
