Hi, I’m Walai, an international student from Papua New Guinea, currently studying the Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) at QUT. My journey began with the Standard Foundation Program at QUT College, which laid the groundwork for my academic success.

Why I chose the Standard Foundation Program

The Standard Foundation Program offered units that encouraged both critical and creative thinking about real-world problem-solving. Gaining essential foundational knowledge and reinforcing academic skills allowed me to transition seamlessly into my Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) degree, adapt to its study requirements, and form new connections.

Supportive learning environment

QUT College has fantastic facilities that really helped me settle into academic life and prepare for my undergraduate degree. The teaching staff were supportive, providing practical feedback and advice throughout my studies.

Making friends on campus

I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity at QUT College. It's a great opportunity to meet people from various backgrounds and form lasting friendships. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, giving me a real taste of university life. I met most of my friends through my classes, which was a great way to connect with people. I’ve attended several summer day trips organised by QUT, which was a fantastic way to meet students outside of my course and make new connections.

My pathway to a QUT degree

The Standard Foundation Program was the perfect bridge into university. Its comprehensive content and academic support gave me the confidence and preparation I needed to succeed in my undergraduate degree.

My favourite part of the Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) degree is the course content. It challenges you to think outside the box and apply knowledge in practical ways, especially when navigating the complexities of stakeholder priorities, development goals, and the broader environmental, economic, and social impacts of the built environment.

Living in Brisbane

I chose to study in Brisbane because I love the weather and the wide range of outdoor activities available. There’s always something going on, and it’s a vibrant city that makes studying here enjoyable.

Final thoughts

I would recommend QUT as the courses are designed to equip students with skills that are relevant in the workforce and real-life situations. The campus facilities are modern, thoughtful, and really focused on supporting student needs.
