What you'll receive
You'll receive:
- a stipend of $37,010 per annum for a maximum duration of 3.5 years while undertaking a QUT PhD. The duration includes an extension of up to 6 months if approved for your PhD candidature. This is the full-time, tax‑exempt rate which will index annually
- a tuition fee offset/sponsorship, covering the cost of your tuition fees for the first 4 full-time equivalent years of your doctoral studies or the first 2 full-time equivalent years of your masters studies
- the opportunity to work with a team of leading researchers, to undertake your own innovative research in and across the field.
As a PhD candidate contributing to the NHMRC-funded SAFEST project, you will also have opportunities to learn from leading clinical researchers from Metro North Health, Queensland’s largest hospital and health service, and healthcare decision-makers from Clinical Excellence Queensland.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship you need to:
- meet the entry requirements for a QUT Doctor of Philosophy, including any English language requirements
- enrol as a full‑time, internal student (unless approval for part-time and/or external study is obtained)
- start your degree 31 March 2027
- have an honours degree (First Class or Second Class – Division A) or masters degree with a research component in one of:
- biostatistics
- statistics
- mathematics
- statistical data science.

About the scholarship
This PhD project will explore how patient flow is best modelled and evaluated within complex hospital systems. The project will apply advanced statistical methods to model the flow-on impacts of different hospital initiatives from ED presentation through to hospital discharge, and subsequent impacts on patient and health system outcomes. By modelling patient flow and the factors that affect it, this project will assist policymakers with decisions that improve patient outcomes and make our public hospitals more efficient.
The candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Nicole White and Professor Jed Duff. They will have the opportunity to engage in a dynamic environment with leading researchers at the QUT Centre for Healthcare Transformation, and clinical partners across Metro North Hospital and Health Service.
