About the bursary

In 2004, the Rotary Club of Toowong was approached by a final year medical student who requested financial assistance to undertake an elective in Papua New Guinea.  The Rotary Club of Toowong Medical Students’ Grant evolved from this request and then became the Rotary Club of Toowong Feros Medical Students’ Grant in honour of club members John and Judy Feros, whose dedication and input helped establish the program and set the foundation for its ongoing success.

In 2015, Rotary extended the program, creating the Rotary Feros Nursing Students’ Grants, to fund nursing students from QUT to undertake a clinical practice experience in a remote or Indigenous clinic or hospital in Queensland for six weeks.

Most recently, in 2022, Rotary extended the program, to the Rotary Feros Health Student Grants, and additionally support students studying a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, and/or Bachelor of Paramedic Science, and/or Bachelor of Radiation Therapy from QUT to undertake student clinical practice in remote or Indigenous healthcare environments. The aim of the Rotary Feros Student Health Grants is to enable students to learn firsthand, the range of health conditions that healthcare workers and clinicians in remote areas routinely manage.
