What you'll receive

There are two scholarships available, which will be paid as one-off payments.

The successful undergraduate student will receive $7,500.

The successful postgraduate student will receive $10,000.

Eligibility

You must:

  • be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • have been accepted or enrolled either part-time or full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate course for Semester 1, 2019
  • have not received this scholarship before.

How to apply

  1. Complete the Oodgeroo Noonuccal Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarship application form (PDF file, 197.1 KB).

    Your application should:

    • address the selection criteria
    • current resume
    • include your current academic transcript
    • include two written referee statements (academic and community).
  2. Submit your completed application form and supporting documents by email, post or fax to the Oodgeroo Unit.

Applications must be received by 5pm on the closing date.

What happens next?

We will assess your application based on merit, community involvement and the extent to which your studies relate to the life and work of Oodgeroo Noonuccal.

Conditions

Undergraduate scholarship

Conditions for keeping the scholarship for an undergraduate student includes:

  • remain enrolled in a minimum of three units per semester
  • commence studies in semester 1 in which the scholarship has been awarded
  • take no more than one year of approved leave of absence from the course which must have been applied for and approved by the relevant faculty in accordance with QUT Policy and relevant Course Rules
  • must maintain a grade point average of four . If the student receives a failing grade (K–2) for more than one unit, the scholarship will be rescinded. The number of grades of three allowable is determined by the relevant course rules
  • maintain active communication with the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT at all times
  • attend the official scholarship presentation ceremony
  • give consent to photographs being taken for the purposes of promotional activities including media, webpages by the Oodgeroo Unit.

Postgraduate scholarship

Conditions for keeping the scholarship for a postgraduate students includes:
  • commence studies in semester 1 in which the scholarship has been awarded
  • take no more than one year of approved leave of absence from the course which must have been applied for and approved by the relevant faculty in accordance with QUT Policy and relevant course rules
  • must maintain a grade point average of four. If the student receives a failing grade (K–2) for more than one unit, the scholarship will be rescinded. The number of grades of three allowable is determined by the relevant course rules (postgraduate coursework)
  • maintain active communication with the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT at all times
  • attend the official scholarship presentation ceremony
  • give consent to photographs being taken for the purposes of promotional activities including media, webpages by the Oodgeroo Unit.

About the scholarship

In recognition of a lifetime commitment to Indigenous peoples and her outstanding contributions to Australian literature, Oodgeroo Noonuccal was awarded three honorary doctorates by Australian universities.

She received two honorary doctorate awards for her contribution to Australian literature: a Doctorate of Letters from Macquarie University and a Doctor of the University from Griffith University.

In 1992 Oodgeroo received an honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Education Queensland University of Technology for both her contribution to literature and in recognition of her work in the field of education.

This scholarship is an ongoing acknowledgment of these lifetime achievements.
