What you'll receive
You'll receive a bursary valued at $1,000.
The scholarship will be paid as a stipend in two instalments of $500 per semester for up to one year, following confirmation of your enrolment after the census date of each semester, commencing Semester 1, 2026.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this bursary, you must be:
- an Australian citizen
- of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and meet the documentary evidence outlined in the Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent information (PDF file, 266 KB)
You must also:
- be enrolled at QUT by the census date and studying full-time (36 credit points or more)
- be enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate award course and have completed a minimum of 96 credit points
- have a course (cumulative) grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher.
How to apply
To be considered for this bursary, you must complete and submit your application online by Sunday, 12 April 2026.
Your application should also include the following attachments:
- a copy of your current QUT academic transcript
- a copy of your resume / curriculum vitae (CV)
- a written submission (150 - 300 words per question) addressing the following topics and questions:
- Tell us about you, your mob, personal attributes, values, leadership qualities and how you have used them to help others.
- Why are you studying your chosen course and how it will help you achieve your future career aspirations.
- What special hardships, challenges, or financial obstacles have you overcome recently during your studies and why this bursary will help you overcome these challenges?
- Demonstrated involvement within the First Nations community and how you plan to use your degree to give back to the community.
What happens next?
The Oodgeroo Unit will convene a selection committee that comprises a representative from the Oodgeroo Unit ad Carumba Institute to assess applications and select suitable recipients.
Applicants may be invited to attend an interview with the committee and be asked further questions to support the committee with their selection.
The selection committee will take into consideration equity of access and representation across diverse groups within the First Nations community.
Successful applicants will be notified by email.

About the bursary
The Geoffrey and Cynthia Taylor Bursary was established by David and Trevor Taylor as a memorial to their parents. Geoffrey Taylor completed a Certificate of Teaching at QUT's predecessor institution in 1943. The wider Taylor family also hold a deep connection to QUT as alumni and staff and have a commitment to lifelong learning and community - principles that uphold the bursary's aim to reward First Nations students for their dedication and commitment to university, research, and future career aspirations.
