Emeritus Professor

Adjunct Professor Helen MacGillivray AM

Adjunct Professor Helen MacGillivray AM is an internationally recognised leader in statistics education, whose contributions span more than five decades. She served QUT with distinction from 1990 to 2011 as Professor of Mathematical Sciences and has continued to make sustained contributions to the international field through her Adjunct role.

Helen’s extensive contributions to QUT include founding and directing the QUT Maths Access Centre, a pioneering initiative that transformed mathematics and statistics support for students within and across disciplines, and mentored student tutors. This laid the foundation for the high impact Student Success Group, which now supports students across the university.

She has published widely, including four textbooks, 50 refereed chapters and papers, more than 100 invited papers and presentations, and other scholarly works. She led the development of QUT statistics curricula and double degrees, and is recognised as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her significant broader contributions extend into high school education where she has played an integral role in shaping our national curriculum.

Helen's influence has extended globally through roles such as Editor of Teaching Statistics, President of the International Statistical Institute – the second female in its 140-year history – and inaugural Chair of the UN Global Network of Institutions for Statistical Training. She was the first female President of the Statistical Society of Australia and one of the first Australian Senior Teaching Fellows. She continues to mentor early career academics and is a role model and advocate for women in STEM.

Adjunct Professor MacGillivray holds a Doctor of Philosophy (1979) and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) (1971), both from The University of Queensland.

She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Honorary Life Member of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc.

In 2024 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to mathematics and statistics education.

In recognition of her sustained and substantial academic service, QUT Council has awarded Adjunct Professor Helen MacGillivray AM the title of Professor Emeritus.

Computational Discovery and Design of Nanomaterials for Solar Energy Applications

Citation

2D materials show great promise for photovoltaics due to the tunable band gaps and strong light absorption. However, complicated experimental syntheses, structural instability, and carrier recombination hinder their applications. Based on DFT calculations, this work proposed three strategies to tune the electronic properties of 2D photovoltaic materials, namely surface decoration, heterostructure construction, and interface sliding. The band edge levels, charge carrier separation, and light absorbance of 2D perovskites and transition metal dichalcogenides can be effectively tuned, which may accelerate the discovery and design of novel low-dimensional photovoltaic devices.

Computational Modeling and Design of Magnetic Properties in 2D Cr-, Mn-, and V-Based Nanostructures for Spintronic Applications

Controlling magnetism at the atomic scale is no longer science fiction, it's the promise of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials. This thesis focuses on enhancing their magnetic properties to power the next generation of spintronic and quantum devices. Through first-principles calculations, the thesis examined three transformative strategies: hydrogenation, atomic intercalation, and van der Waals heterostructure engineering. Each method leads to substantial improvements in magnetic anisotropy, thermal stability, and transition temperatures, key factors for practical applications. These findings offer a clear pathway toward high-performance, nanoscale magnetic devices and open new frontiers in the design of advanced, low-dimensional electronic systems.

Functional Polymer Backbones via Non-Traditional Chemistry: Redefining Step-Growth Polymers

This thesis redefines step-growth polymers by developing functional polymer backbones through non-traditional chemistry, including multicomponent reactions and sulfur-based chalcogen incorporation. It delivers novel synthetic strategies for creating degradable and sustainable materials. Three approaches are explored: (1) polythioesters via Passerini multicomponent reactions as a new route for sulfur incorporation, (2) light-degradable polymers using rhodanine–diisocyanide chemistry enabling selective backbone cleavage under visible light, and (3) a greener pathway to elastomeric materials via multicomponent reactions with elemental sulfur. These findings broaden the utility of step-growth polymerization for functional and environmentally conscious material design.

Portable Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) for Quantitative Measurement of Biological Tissues

This thesis explores portable nuclear magnetic resonance (pNMR) for breast tissue characterisation and mammographic density (MD) assessment. Three studies were conducted: quantifying water-fat ratios in explants, emulating 3D volumetric MD using pNMR volume slices mapped to CT/MRI, and investigating the magic-angle effect on NMR T2 relaxation in collagen-rich tissues. Agreement levels across imaging modalities varied, reflecting compositional and analytical complexities. Overall, pNMR demonstrates potential for quantitative MD evaluation, highlighting key features and opportunities in breast tissue assessment but challenges remain in making measurements accurate and consistent.

Applying Best-Practice Detection Strategies in Threatened Small Mammal Conservation: A Case study Using Endangered Antechinuses

This research investigated how different detection methods can improve monitoring of two endangered carnivorous marsupials, the silver-headed and black-tailed dusky antechinus. The study found that detection dogs were more effective than live and camera traps at locating these rare mammals, even as populations declined, and providing insights into their habitat needs. Additionally, scent ageing experiments showed antechinus odour fading over time, with scat and latrine samples retaining scent longer and more easily detected by dogs, and environmental factors influencing scent persistence. The results highlight the importance of detection dogs in locating rare and low-density species and informing their conservation management.

Investigating Drivers of Speciation in the Fruit Fly Genus, Bactrocera (Diptera: Tephritidae)

This thesis investigated how numerous fruit fly species in the genus Bactrocera have arisen despite a lack of geographic separation and host use differences (generally considered essential for speciation). It found that geographic change and historical introgression enabled speciation without the need for strong ecological separation, challenging assumptions that niche partitioning is necessary for coexistence of closely related species. The research combined phylogenetic analysis, genomic data, and ecological modelling to examine macro- and microevolutionary processes influencing diversification/speciation. These findings provide new insights into how generalist phytophagous insects can radiate and persist in sympatry.

Investigation of Charge Storage Mechanisms in Tin-Based Oxides for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode Development

This thesis investigates the charge storage mechanisms of metal oxide materials for supercapacitor electrodes, with a focus on tin-based oxides. By using cost-effective synthesis methods, the study examines the electrochemical performance of different tin oxide phases. The key findings demonstrate that the annealing temperature, crystallite size, and oxidation states significantly affect capacitance and electrochemical behavior. Higher oxidation states enhance capacitive storage, while smaller crystallite sizes improve performance. Despite the challenges in synthesizing the ideal spinel oxide, this research provides valuable insights and lays the groundwork for future advancements in supercapacitor materials and energy storage technologies.

Advanced Functional Macromolecular Architecture

Citation

Control over polymer architecture is a crucial parameter to manipulate macromolecular function, both in solution and on surface. Nature exemplifies this in enzymes, which show unmatched catalytic function due to their defined three-dimensional structure. In this thesis, peptide based single chain nanoparticles carrying the DHS sequence are utilized for the catalysis of ester hydrolysis reactions where the reaction rate may be increased. The catalytic triad is further investigated and combined with a novel peptide stapling chemistry based on pyridinedithiazolines. Finally, polymer brushes are obtained and photochemically manipulated to create complex patterns on surface at the nanoscopic level.

Mapping Oxidation States and Structural Dynamics in Co Oxide Thin Films Incorporated With Gold When Used as Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts

This research develops efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production via water electrolysis, focusing on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Cobalt oxide-based catalysts were explored as low-cost alternatives to noble metals, with gold incorporation to enhance activity. A key highlight of this work is the use of synchrotron radiation (SR) techniques, particularly spatially-resolved X-ray mapping, to investigate structural, elemental, and oxidation state distributions. These techniques revealed how gold incorporation facilitates OER by lowering metal–ligand charge transfer and exposing active facets during OER. This study demonstrates the power of SR-based mapping in guiding rational catalyst design for energy applications.

This thesis serves as a significant illustration of the effective utilization of electronic waste, in particularly batteries, as a valuable source of essential metals such as Ni, Fe, Mn, Co and P. Upon recovery, these metals can play a crucial role as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting for hydrogen production, while also having potential for other electrocatalytic reactions such as CO2 conversion into valuable products.

Modelling and Measuring Particle Size Dependent Thermo-optical Effects in Au and Ag colloids

Citation

The unique optical properties of gold and silver nanoparticles are measured under exposure to intense laser light. These properties changed based on the size of the nanoparticle and this work showed the optical response of materials exposed to laser light broadly corresponds to its response to low intensity light. Thermal effects emerged as laser intensity increased which caused the heating of the metallic nanoparticles and generation of a vapour gas shell surrounding them. The growth of these vapour shells improved the ability of these nanoparticles to limit the transmittance of intense light by significantly increasing the scattering response.

An Inverse Photoemission Spectrometer Using both UV and Low-energy Detection Ranges

This thesis presents the development of a multi-energy inverse photoemission system for QUT’s surface science laboratory, integrating ultraviolet and low-energy detection through the use of both a gas counter and a photomultiplier tube. The system was benchmarked on C60 and Cu(111) surfaces, demonstrating reliable performance. It was applied to study 1,4-dibromobenzene and trimesic acid films, revealing effects of molecular orientation on electronic structure and showing that low-energy electron beams can damage organic layers via dissociative electron attachment. The work delivers a versatile dual-detection IPES instrument that advances surface science research on organic and inorganic materials.

Assessing Plant Diversity and Invasion Patterns: The Role of Herbivory and Tree-Understorey Dynamics in Threatened Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands

Citation

Eucalypt woodlands comprise some of Australia’s most threatened ecosystems. This thesis examined how threats of degradation, such as grazing, plant invasion, and tree clearing, affect the understorey of the lowland grassy woodlands. Trees, depending on traits, provided environmental conditions that favour native grasses over the invasive grass Eragrostis curvula. The progressive exclusion of livestock and native mammals subsequently increased grass growth, and plant diversity declined, whereas the additional exclusion of invertebrates was associated with grass dieback, and plant diversity increased. These findings highlight the importance of tree cover, native herbivores, and disturbance regimes in maintaining and diversifying understorey plant composition.

They Protectin, They Attackin, But Most Importantly, They Trypsin: Toxin Discovery in Sea Anemones

This thesis is a comparative study of genes and proteins that examines the presence and role of toxins  in sea anemones. This work looks at the expression of toxins in two highly important cellular structures found in sea anemones and compares them to the existing database of this understudied group. Overall, this thesis identified low complexity in the venom components of an Australian species, as well as several new toxin candidates that pave the way for future research in pharmaceutical research.

Computational Discovery and Design of Low-Dimensional Magnetic Materials

This research explores new ways to design ultra-thin magnetic materials for next-generation electronics. These two-dimensional (2D) materials could power spintronic devices, which use electron spins instead of electric charge, enabling faster and more energy-efficient technologies. Using advanced computer simulations, the study shows how adding chemical groups or rearranging atoms can enhance magnetic stability and performance. It also models how these materials could work in real devices. The findings bring us closer to practical 2D magnets for memory and logic applications, paving the way for smaller, smarter, and more sustainable electronics.
