Emeritus Professor

Professor Gayle Kerr

Professor Gayle Kerr is a highly distinguished advertising scholar and academic leader, who has made exceptional contributions to advertising education and research by pioneering Australia’s advertising curriculum and advancing the field of Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC).

Professor Kerr retired from QUT this February, after more than 30 years of service. Internationally recognised as the architect of Australia's advertising education, she developed Australia's first Masters in Advertising in 1996 and first Masters in Integrated Marketing Communication in 2003, establishing QUT as the national leader in the discipline.

She has an outstanding research record, with 93 publications, including four co-authored books, six book chapters, and 83 refereed journal articles. Her textbook Advertising: An IMC Perspective, now in its fourth edition, is used in universities worldwide, and she served as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Marketing Communications for 14 years.

Professor Kerr provided sustained academic leadership as the Advertising and IMC Study Area Coordinator at QUT for 19 years across multiple periods and led significant curriculum innovations, including introducing Australia's first digital advertising unit in 2013.

Her visionary leadership was profiled beyond QUT through her founding of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Advertising in 2007, serving as its President until 2014. She also created AdSpace, Australia's first high school Advertising challenge, which continues to build awareness of advertising education and provides mentoring opportunities for QUT students.

Professor Kerr's international reputation was evidenced in her appointment as the first non-American academic to serve on the American Academy of Advertising Executive, and by receiving the inaugural Don Schultz Award for IMC Teaching, Research and Practice from Northwestern University, making her the only Australian to ever receive this prestigious recognition

Professor Kerr’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Business Communication (Advertising) (1979); Master of Business (Research) (Integrated Marketing Communication) (1997); and Doctor of Philosophy (Integrated Marketing Communication) (2003) all from QUT.

In recognition of his sustained and substantial academic service, QUT Council has awarded Professor Kerr the title of Professor Emeritus.

Thesis Title

Investment Behaviour in the Digital Equity Market: The Role of Campaign Information, Investor Information Processing and Platform Features

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Tyge-Frederik Kummer (Principal Supervisor)
  • Emeritus Professor Peter Green (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how non-professional investors make decisions in equity crowdfunding, a high-risk digital equity market characterised by significant information asymmetry and the absence of traditional intermediaries. It shows that the information quality, credible sources and trustworthy platform design strongly influence investment decisions and investors’ trust. Through three interconnected studies employing multiple research methods, including analysis of 285 real campaigns, a controlled experiment with 142 participants, and a survey of 259 investors, the thesis offers practical guidance for crowdfunding platforms, entrepreneurs, and regulators to support more informed investment decisions and strengthen accountability in digital finance.

Thesis Title

Australia’s ‘Two-Strikes’ Rule: What motivates non-executive directors to respond to a strike against the remuneration report?

Supervisors

  • Professor Larelle Chapple (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Julie-Anne Tarr (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Michelle Welsh (External Supervisor)

Citation

Over the last 30 years, executive remuneration has been the subject of considerable debate in the community. In response to these concerns, the Australian Government legislated the Corporations Amendment (Improving Accountability on Director and Executive Remuneration) Bill 2011, and in particular, the ‘two-strikes’ rule. The objective of this study was to investigate the ‘two-strikes’ rule and what motivated non-executive directors to respond to a strike against the remuneration report. The study finds that there were multiple reasons for responding to a remuneration report strike including acting in the best interests of the company and maintaining shareholder confidence.

Thesis Title

Sustainability in the Age of Big Data: Predicting Sustainable Sales and Engagement Using Automated Text and Video Analysis

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Frank Mathmann (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Gary Mortimer (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Sustainability is one of the defining grand challenges of our time, with urgent calls for consumers, businesses, and governments to accelerate the adoption of sustainable products and practices. This thesis investigates how sustainability is communicated on digital platforms through a Motivation–Affect–Context (MAC) framework which examines how language, emotion, and context influence consumer engagement and sales of sustainable alternatives. Big data from social media, sales, and livestream platforms were analysed to offer implications for future sustainability marketing strategy. The findings provide observational insights for improving sustainability marketing and supporting broader shifts toward sustainable consumption.

Integrated Disclosures in Sri Lanka: Disclosure Quality, Governance and Economic Crisis

Supervisors

  • Professor Larelle Chapple (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Elisabeth Sinnewe (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Yuyu Zhang (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines the role of governance mechanisms, particularly audit committee effectiveness, internal audit function, and external assurance, in explaining integrated disclosure quality in the Sri Lankan context. Integrated reporting provides a holistic framework linking financial and non-financial information to explain value creation over time. The findings demonstrate that audit committee composition, internal audit function and external assurance significantly improve integrated disclosure quality, particularly across performance, risk, and strategy-related disclosures. The unique setting of the economic crisis of Sri Lanka offers insights through agency theory, demonstrating the role of governance mechanisms in upholding corporate transparency during economic crisis.

Allocating Profits in a Digital Economy: The Case of the Sharing Economy

Supervisors

  • Professor Kerrie Sadiq (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Larelle Chapple (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

As profit allocation for sharing-economy platforms struggles to reflect real economic activity under the current international tax regime, this thesis examines how profits can be fairly distributed. It develops a formula tailored to the sharing economy under formulary apportionment, using digital labour and sales as equally weighted factors to capture value creation and economic substance. The role of users in data generation and platform transactions is highlighted. Using Airbnb as a case study, the thesis finds that the proposed formula could allocate profits to jurisdictions where economic activity takes place and value is created, thereby achieving a fairer profit allocation.
