Practical Uncertainty in Neural Networks
Supervisors
- Professor Clinton Fookes (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Dimitri Perrin (Associate Supervisor)
- Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
The adoption of machine learning technologies has grown considerably as the predictive performance of deep learning models continues to improve. Application of these systems for real-world scenarios requires not only raw predictive power, but also informative uncertainty information. Quantifying uncertainty comes at the expense of increased computation and time, and as a result most models do not aim to communicate any such information. This thesis addresses this by proposing practical means to quantify uncertainty in offline scenarios, real-time scenarios, and within existing neural networks not designed within a probabilistic framework.

Localised Failures of Thin Steel Battens Under Extreme Temperature Environments
Supervisors
- Professor Mahadeva Mahendran (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Anthony Ariyanayagam (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This research investigated the behaviour of cold-formed steel (CFS) battens used in the cladding systems of external building envelopes under extreme weather conditions. Through detailed experimental and numerical studies, it examined the critical pull-through and pull-out failures of batten screw connections at elevated temperatures (simulating bushfires) and sub-zero temperatures (simulating blizzards). This research identified the critical parameters influencing these failures and developed new design capacity equations for inclusion in the CFS design standards. The use of the findings from this research will improve the resilience of CFS cladding systems under extreme bushfire and blizzard conditions.

Sensorless Control and Large Signal Stability Analysis of Microgrids
Supervisors
- Professor Don Vilathgamuwa (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Dezso Sera (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis addresses key control and stability challenges in microgrids operating with high levels of renewable energy. It presents novel methods to enhance reliability and reduce dependence on physical sensors in dynamic conditions. A sensorless control strategy using voltage and current estimators is proposed and validated through simulations and experiments, maintaining system performance under partial shading and fluctuating loads. A new approach for large signal stability analysis is also introduced, defining the region of attraction for converter-based systems. The outcomes contribute to the development of cost-effective, robust, and scalable control solutions for future renewable-powered microgrids.

Response of Underground Transport Tunnels to Internal Explosion and Mitigation Using Materials Technology
Supervisors
- Professor David Thambiratnam (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Hung Tin Tommy Chan (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Tatheer Zahra (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Ruwanika Chandramani Piyasena Rajapakshage (External Supervisor)
Citation
This research treats the vulnerability of underground transport tunnels to credible internal explosions and evaluates the effects of controlling parameters. Both load and structure related parameters are examined through numerical simulations, as full-scale testing is impractical. A mitigation strategy is developed using auxetic composite render as an energy-absorbing protective layer for tunnel linings. Research findings obtained through coupled and uncoupled analyses will help to enhance tunnel safety under internal explosions. They will enable retrofitting existing tunnels and new tunnel designs for improved resilience against deliberate and accidental explosions.

An Investigation on the In-Plane Performance of Shear Walls for Low to Moderate Seismic Regions
Supervisors
- Dr Tatheer Zahra (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Hossein Derakhshan (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Julian Thamboo (External Supervisor)
- Professor David Thambiratnam (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examined the performance of reinforced masonry (RM) and reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls, which are essential for protecting buildings during earthquakes. By analysing walls with single and double layers of reinforcement, the study assessed their strength, ductility, drift, and vulnerability through experimental tests, analytical models, and advanced simulations. The findings revealed that RM walls with limited ductility outperformed non-ductile RC walls and demonstrated comparable resilience and drift capacity to limited ductile RC walls. This emphasised the potential of RM walls as a reliable and resilient option for earthquake-resistant design in low to moderate seismic regions such as Australia.

Spiking Neural Networks for Scalable Visual Place Recognition
Supervisors
- Dr Tobias Fischer (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Michael Milford (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigates how Spiking Neural Networks, inspired by our brains, can serve as an alternative to current systems for Visual Place Recognition, a critical component in autonomous robotic navigation. This research introduces a spiking network tailored for place recognition that is scalable to large environments and integrates strategies that enhance robustness against appearance changes. Once deployed on specialised brain-inspired neuromorphic hardware, spiking networks promise high energy efficiency, paving the way for robots that are efficient and can operate autonomously over long periods, especially in scenarios with resource constraints.

Experimental Investigation of Factors Influencing Long-Term Performance of Geocomposite-Reinforced Subgrades Under Cyclic Loading
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Chaminda Gallage (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Yilin Gui (Associate Supervisor)
- Mr Jothi Ramanujam (External Supervisor)
Citation
This study focuses on examining the factors that influence the long-term performance of geocomposite-reinforced subgrades under dynamic loading conditions. The model subgrades were tested with varying capping layer thicknesses (100-300mm), reinforcement conditions, types of geocomposites, different in-situ subgrade stiffnesses, and types of unbound granular materials. The surface rutting, subgrade permanent deformations, subgrade pressures, and permanent strains on the geocomposites were monitored and analysed to develop design guidelines for stabilised subgrades.

Investigation on Ride Comfort of High-Speed Train Subject to Braking
Supervisors
- Professor Hung Tin Tommy Chan (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Craig Cowled (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This study was carried out to examine the ride comfort of a high-speed train during braking and proposed improvement solutions based on dynamic acceleration responses. The influences of a range of factors, such as input brake torque, variation of suspension characteristics, and rail irregularity, were investigated to ascertain whether the train was within the comfort limit. By using a fixed coordinate reference frame method, a multi-body dynamic model was established to analyse the acceleration responses when the brake is applied. The outcomes of this thesis will contribute towards better ride comfort for high-speed train passengers during severe braking.
