Thesis Title

A Sociotechnical System for Earthmoving Equipment Safety in Australian Construction Sites

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Ka Hung Hon (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Robin Drogemuller (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines earthmoving equipment operations (EEOs) as a sociotechnical safety system within the Australian construction industry. It analyses causal risk factors across regulatory, organisational, and operational levels using Rasmussen’s Risk Management Framework. Through a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative data, the study shows that safety solutions remain focused on workers and site operations, overlooking important cross-level influences. The research develops a systemic model identifying influential risk factors and demonstrates how understanding risk causes and effects across all levels of the safety management system can improve information flow, strengthen technological solutions, and enhance decision-making across the EEOs’ life cycle.

Thesis Title

Bridging Machine and Human Intelligence for Urban Road Network Resilience: The 2022 Eastern Australia Floods Case Study

Supervisors

  • Professor Bo Xia (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Ka Hung Hon (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Tan Yigitcanlar (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis investigates how crowdsourced data shared by the public can support disaster response and road network resilience assessment during major flood events. Using the 2022 Eastern Australia floods as a case study, the research developed a data-driven framework that combines big data analytics, machine learning, and human-like reasoning to identify road closures and assess disruption impacts in near real time. The findings demonstrate that crowdsourced data can provide reliable and timely situational awareness when validated against authoritative sources. The research contributes a practical and interpretable approach for improving evidence-based decision-making during disasters.

Thesis Title

Charting the Road to Autonomous Mobility: Understanding Acceptance and Mobility Choices of Australians in a Driverless Future

Supervisors

  • Professor Tan Yigitcanlar (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Alexander Paz (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Md Kamruzzaman (External Supervisor)

Citation

This research explores how autonomous vehicles (driverless cars) may change the way people travel in Australian cities. Using global research analysis and a survey of over 2,000 people in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, the study examines public attitudes toward private, shared, and public driverless transport. The findings show that younger and more tech-familiar users are more open to shared and public autonomous mobility, while people who rely heavily on private cars are more hesitant. The research provides insights for policymakers and planners on how to prepare cities and transport systems for the safe, inclusive, and sustainable integration of driverless technologies.

Thesis Title

Planning for Smart Campus Transformation in the Global South: The Case of Papua New Guinea University of Technology

Supervisors

  • Professor Tan Yigitcanlar (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Mark Limb (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Tracy Washington (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Smart campus research lacks integrated frameworks and context-sensitive approaches for Global South universities facing resource and governance constraints. This study developed and validated a comprehensive Smart Campus Assessment Framework and governance model, demonstrating practical applicability and supporting sustainable, adaptive digital transformation. Using a systematic review, Delphi validation, and a case study, the research defined the smart campus and introduced a framework of four domains, sixteen categories, and forty-eight indicators. It advances theory and practice by providing universities with structured tools to assess, plan, and sustain smart campus development as a governance-driven, resilient, and context-responsive transformation.

Additive Manufacturing Using Waste Materials 'Towards Sustainable Architecture'

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Muge Fialho Leandro Alves Teixeira (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Glenda Caldwell (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Jared Donovan (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Tatheer Zahra (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Australia's agricultural sector is a significant contributor to the country's emissions, with sugar production being a key source. This research addresses this issue by repurposing sugarcane by-products into clay composites for sustainable architecture. Inspired by vernacular building principles, it develops additively manufactured facade elements designed to regulate natural lighting, ventilation, and privacy. Through a design-led process, material mixtures were created, their performance tested, and a prototype built. The research culminated in a systematic framework to guide the future use of agricultural by-products and waste materials in construction for sustainable future.
