A Physics-Based Mathematical Model for Predicting Quality Changes During Drying of Plant-Based Food Materials

Citation

This thesis proposes a novel theoretical quality model for predicting physical changes during drying of plant-based food materials utilizing the outcomes of comprehensive drying model and mechanistic deformation model. The shrinkage model developed in this study confers new insight into the approach of correlating shrinkage kinetics with solid structure mobility considering physicochemical state variation during drying. Key physical quality attributes such as fracture, case hardening, and physicochemical changes have been predicted using temperature-moisture from multiphase drying model and viscoelastic stress-strain distributions from shrinkage model. The developed framework will provide new insights for evaluating dried product quality and optimizing drying processes.

This study explored how to improve the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the precast manufacturing process (PMP), a key phase in precast concrete construction (PCC). Simulation models were developed and tested using real-world data from Australian factories to identify major bottlenecks such as reinforcement and formwork tasks and evaluate practical strategies to enhance efficiency, reduce delays, and increase profitability of the process. The findings provide valuable insights and tools for the construction industry, particularly in Australia, to adopt precast methods more effectively, improve resource utilization, and meet growing housing demands through better planning, workforce management, and lower overall costs.

This thesis examined the role of blood flow in the growth and weakening of brain aneurysms. It shows that specific flow patterns, particularly wall shear stress divergence, can pinpoint areas of the aneurysm wall most at risk of instability. Developed in close collaboration with clinicians at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, this work combines patient-specific modelling with bench-top experiments to ensure clinical relevance. These findings advance understanding of aneurysm progression and may support more precise assessment of rupture risk in the future.

Water and Biomolecule Dynamics in Extracellular Matrix-Based Hydrogels

This study uses non-destructive Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to analyse water and drug dynamics within GelMA and decellularised extracellular matrix (dECM) hydrogels for tissue engineering. By measuring relaxation constants (T1, T2, and T1rho), diffusion coefficients, microviscosity, and polymer-water chemical exchange rate can be estimated. Distinct dECM sources (bone, cartilage, lung) exhibited unique water profiles. Furthermore, water relaxometry successfully monitored hydrogel degradation and new ECM formation. Finally, 19F NMR relaxometry effectively tracked the dynamics of fluorinated payloads, proving to be a viable, fluorophore-free method for evaluating drug delivery systems.

Ceramics are lightweight and strong, but their uses are limited by brittleness and the difficulty in shaping complex shapes without compromising mechanical properties. This thesis develops light-based printing techniques that emulate nacre’s interlocking ‘brick-wall’ architecture, creating ceramic composites with improved toughness. It also introduces a self-shaping strategy based on sequential printing of ceramic resins with heterogeneous particle concentrations. This induces well-defined deformations such as bending, folding, and twisting during sintering without weakening ceramic materials. A material-and scale-independent mechanical model that predicts shape changes was also developed. Overall, this thesis addresses key challenges in improving toughness and shaping complex ceramic structures.

This thesis furthers research towards producing tissue-engineered bone grafts with strong bioactive effects, arising from their chemical properties and mechanical stimulation. It presents a new method for producing intricate scaffolds of bioceramic/polymer composites using 3D printing, combining the flexibility of polymers with the regenerative effects of bioceramics. It also presents the development of an open-source bioreactor suitable for stimulating cell constructs made of the composites with cyclic tensile strain. The bioreactor enables tissue-engineering research towards determining the optimal loading regimes to encourage bone regeneration.

An Ensemble of Pressure Adaptive Signal Control Algorithms for Urban Traffic Networks

This thesis revamps how traffic signals respond to real-time congestion on busy urban roads. It develops Pressure Adaptive Signal Control ALgorithm (PASCAL), a novel max-pressure control method that can flexibly serve the most urgent traffic movements by calculating pressures exerted while still giving fair service to all directions. Two extensions are then introduced: Coord-PASCAL, which creates smoother green waves along corridors, and Transit-PASCAL, which gives smarter priority to buses at the intersections using factors like delay, headway, and passenger occupancy. Simulation on a real Brisbane corridor shows these methods reduce congestion, queues, and delays, especially under heavy traffic.

Investigating the Biomechanics of the Biphasic Plating Concept

Current fracture fixation implants are associated with delayed healing and implant failure, resulting in delayed return to activities of daily living. This thesis investigates the mechanics of the Biphasic Plate, designed to provide a favourable mechanical environment for fracture healing while supporting earlier functional loading. Computer-based simulations were used to quantify the influence of key design features on mechanical performance and across different stages of healing. The Biphasic Plate exhibited a distinctive biphasic stiffness response, leading to increased fracture motion and reduced implant stress. These findings inform design guidelines for translating the Biphasic Plate concept to different fracture types.

Implant infections caused by bacteria and biofilms remain a major challenge in tissue engineering, as current prevention methods rely heavily on systemic antibiotics that are often ineffective and contribute to antibiotic resistance. This research developed a new antibacterial coating for biodegradable implants that can release antibacterial molecules in response to infection-like conditions. The study showed that tannic acid can form a stable polymer coating on 3D-printed scaffolds, enabling controlled and pH-responsive antibacterial release. These coatings significantly reduced bacterial growth while supporting early cell attachment, offering a promising strategy for safer next-generation bioresorbable implants.

Traffic congestion is a growing challenge for modern cities. To manage it effectively, city planners need to know exactly where drivers start and end their journeys. However, this is a mathematically complex task and can take days to process. This research introduces innovative frameworks that use 'Key Intervals' and advanced data filtering to simplify these calculations. By focusing on the most influential travel periods and corridors, the proposed methods significantly speed up traffic estimations. This allows city authorities to respond to congestion in real-time, leading to smoother commutes and smarter urban transport systems.

A series of large-scale pavement model tests were conducted in a laboratory environment to investigate the effect of geosynthetics in improving the modulus of weak subgrades. Then, a series of supplement design charts that could be useful for industry practitioners to design geosynthetic reinforced flexible pavements were developed. The outcomes of this study promote the use of geosynthetics in road construction to make economical, environmentally friendly, climate resilient, and sustainable road infrastructure.

Fire Resistance of LSF Floor Systems Made of Lipped Channel Joists

Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) members are highly susceptible to performance degradation in fire. This research has investigated the fire behaviour of light-gauge steel-framed (LSF) floor systems constructed with CFS joists through short-span and full-scale ambient temperature and fire tests, and advanced finite element simulations. Key parameters influencing the fire resistance of LSF floors were identified, while the study developed reliable fire resistance levels for all commonly used LSF floor systems. New equations were also developed for predicting the important plasterboard fall-off times. The research findings can be utilized by fire engineers to design fire-safe LSF floor systems in mid-rise buildings.

It has significantly improved the knowledge of the behaviour and design of all commonly used LSF truss floor systems under ambient and fire conditions and provided their fire resistance levels. Axial Compressive Behaviour of Confined Seawater Sea Sand Rubberised Concrete

This thesis introduces seawater sea sand rubberised concrete (SWSSRuC) as an eco-engineered alternative to traditional concrete for coastal structures, where superior ductility is critical. The effectiveness of confinement through glass-fibre reinforced polymer tubes and stainless steel tubes in enhancing the axial compression response of SWSSRuC is systematically investigated. Experimental and numerical results are utilised to develop axial capacity prediction models for the investigated confined SWSSRuC columns. The study establishes a foundational understanding of SWSSRuC at both the material and structural levels, contributing to the advancement of sustainable and high-performance construction materials.

Structural alloys face premature failure due to complex stress-corrosion interactions. This research developed a simplified framework using prestressed specimens to investigate these mechanisms in two key areas. First, for next-generation Thermal Energy Storage (TES), experiments demonstrated that tensile residual stresses directly accelerate corrosion kinetics. Second, in alloys undergoing Precipitation-Hardening (PH), results showed that residual stresses cause cracking during heat treatment. The study delivers a validated, low-cost methodology for life-cycle assessment and recommends that future TES tanks be designed based on stress as a key consideration for material compatibility assessment and that stress relaxation processes are crucial prior to commencing PH.

A Microfluidic Device for Screening Immune Responses of the Respiratory Airways

This thesis developed a microfluidic device to study how immune cells respond to infection in the respiratory airways. The platform supported the mature culture of airway cells at the air–liquid interface and enabled real-time imaging of immune cell recruitment at single-cell resolution. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection induced inflammatory signals in airway cells that drove directional immune cell migration, while treatment with a monoclonal antibody attenuated this response. The device revealed distinct immune cell behaviors that are obscured in current models, providing a physiologically relevant platform for studying airway-immune interactions and testing new therapies.
