Thesis Title

A Retrospective Evaluation of the Outcomes of State-Wide Disaster Mental Health Programs Established and Delivered Following the Cyclones and Floods of 2010-2011

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Ross Young (Principal Supervisor)
  • Emeritus Professor Gerard Fitzgerald (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Jane Shakespeare-Finch (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

The research evaluated the Post-disaster Mental Health Program established in Queensland following the Floods and Cyclones of 2010-11. The evaluation examined the effectiveness of post-disaster mental health screening using a statewide general health 24-hour call-line and a mental health clinician embedded in a rural general practice. The evaluation assessed the relationship between personal and socio-economic factors and participation in the treatment program, and the effectiveness of the therapeutic interventions. The research assessed from a clinician’s perspective the effectiveness of the training program implemented for clinicians employed in the Post-disaster service and the barriers to care observed by the clinicians.

Thesis Title

An Investigation of How Leadership Factors Impact the Mental Health of Emergency Service Workers

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Jane Shakespeare-Finch (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Erin O'Connor (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis advanced leadership theory by exploring the nature of leadership and mental health in frontline personnel. Findings highlight the crucial role of leaders in supporting the mental health of their followers and introduces a preliminary Trauma-Informed Leadership model. Using reflexive thematic analysis of interviews with paramedics and emergency medical dispatchers, the research includes analysis of leader and follower perspectives of what makes a good leader and dyadic case studies. Followers described feeling valued, less distressed, a sense of belongingness and greater opportunities for sense-making when professionally credible leaders provided meaningful support within a psychologically safe connection.

Thesis Title

Exploring the Abscopal Effects of Radiotherapy and Immunotherapy for the Treatment of Metastatic Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Supervisors

  • Professor Davide Fontanarosa (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Andrew Fielding (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Erik Thompson (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Roberta Mazzieri (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Gishan Ratnayake (External Supervisor)

Citation

There is an urgent unmet clinical need to improve therapeutic outcomes for patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC is associated with early age of onset, strong metastatic progression, and poorer survival rates compared to other types of breast cancer. This thesis investigated the use of hypofractionated conformal radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors to promote a robust antitumour immune response to eliminate distant metastases. Cellular and cytokine responses were identified through extensive immune profiling to confirm the optimal treatment regimen. The heterogeneity in cell responses and composition highlights the complexity of the mechanisms that drive robust antitumour immunity.

Thesis Title

"I Feel Your Pain": Exploring the Embodied Impacts of Complex Trauma Therapy on the Life of the Therapist

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Jane Shakespeare-Finch (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Brooke Andrew (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Ronald Frey (External Supervisor)

Citation

Complex trauma occurs from repeated trauma experiences that are severe and prolonged, including child abuse, and domestic and family violence. Given the high prevalence of complex trauma in Australia, there is a need to understand the impacts on therapists working with complex trauma exposed clients. This research identified that there are unique costs to the health of therapists working with complex trauma, including high levels of burnout and secondary traumatic stress. The findings confirmed that secondary trauma responses in therapists could be ameliorated through supportive and trauma-informed supervision. This thesis has significant implications for university training, supervision, and organisational support.

Thesis Title

Braking the Cycle: Associations of a Learner Driver Mentor Program with the Risky Driving, Perceptions of Procedural Justice, and Wellbeing of Disadvantaged Novice Drivers

Supervisors

  • Dr David Rodwell (Principal Supervisor)
  • Tony Machin (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Lyndel Bates (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Teresa Senserrick (External Supervisor)
  • Emeritus Professor Barry Watson (Mentoring Supervisor)

Citation

This research examined how Braking the Cycle, a Queensland learner driver mentoring program, influenced novice drivers using procedural justice and Basic Psychological Needs Theory frameworks. The study investigated participants' risky driving perceptions, intentions, behaviours, and procedural justice perceptions, exploring psychological wellbeing, mentor satisfaction, and regional/urban differences. Significant relationships emerged between greater mentor satisfaction and reduced risky driving, positive procedural justice perceptions, and enhanced wellbeing. Results provide insights into program participation effects on disadvantaged novice drivers, offering practical implications for mentor training and program operations to improve driving development, wellbeing, and road safety outcomes.

Thesis Title

Towards Comprehensive, Dynamic Shoulder Mosaicking Using Multiple Distributed 3D Ultrasound Transducers

Supervisors

  • Professor Davide Fontanarosa (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Peter Pivonka (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Maria Antico (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Ultrasound can safely capture 3D images of the internal anatomy in real-time but is limited by its narrow field of view and reliance on skilled operators. This research developed a panorama algorithm that combines multiple ultrasound scans from various directions to generate a single clinical 3D ultrasound scan of the entire patient's shoulder. It also demonstrated that we could measure large anatomical distances and track bony surfaces in this view. This work lays the foundation for wearable ultrasound systems that could one day offer real-time 3D imaging of the entire body without needing large, harmful, expensive machines.
