Thesis Title

Adopting Open Innovation in the Public Sector: The Case of Saudi Arabia

Supervisors

  • Dr Kavoos Mohannak (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Judith Matthews (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines open innovation adoption in Saudi public sector organisations, identifying the internal and external factors, as well as the roles of key actors, essential for a successful adoption. The study develops an integrated process framework that incorporates insights from change management to explain how public organisations can implement open innovation more effectively while mitigating barriers to change and collaboration. Utilising a qualitative case study methodology, the thesis provides practical guidance for public sector leaders and contributes to the broader understanding of open innovation within government organisations, particularly in the context of Saudi Arabia.

Thesis Title

Modern Analytical Approaches to Predict and Understand Entrepreneurial Behaviour: Evidence from GEM Data

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Gian Casali (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Char-lee McLennan (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores how algorithmic modelling can help understand and predict who will undertake an entrepreneurial venture. It integrates big-data analysis and theoretical insights to explain decision-making in the creation of new businesses. Using bibliometric mapping and machine learning applied to Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data, this study reveals that simple, consistent data patterns can reliably predict entrepreneurial actions, potentially highlighting bounded-rationality decision-making rather than rational-choice models. Additionally, it introduces a Future Research Initiatives framework to guide new research directions. The results show that practical, predictive models can complement theoretical approaches, thereby advancing understanding and support for entrepreneurship.

Thesis Title

Dual Forces at Play: Exploring Digitalisation and Disruptive Events in the Internationalisation of German Manufacturing SMEs

Supervisors

  • Dr Forough Zarea Fazlelahi (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Charmaine Glavas (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Shane Mathews (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This research explored how digital technology adoption and disruptive events like COVID-19 and geopolitical crises influenced the internationalisation of German small and medium-sized manufacturing firms. Through in-depth interviews over two years, the research found that digitalisation and internationalisation are not separate journeys but deeply connected, evolving together over time. Unexpected events, while challenging, also triggered new opportunities, pushing firms to rethink strategies and become more flexible. Rather than seeing disruption as temporary, the research shows it has become a constant reality. The findings offer practical guidance for businesses and policymakers to support digital growth and global competitiveness in uncertain times.

Thesis Title

Is the Struggle Real? Investigating Whether Highly Sensitive People Experience Well-Being in Leadership Positions

Supervisors

  • Professor Peter O'Connor (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Nerina Jimmieson (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Leadership can be challenging and its impact on one’s well-being differs across individuals. Using surveys and interviews, this thesis shows highly sensitive leaders face greater challenges yet also benefit more from supportive environments. Sensory processing sensitivity was found to shape how leaders respond to job demands and job resources. Highly sensitive leaders were more negatively affected by conflict but found engaging in people- and task-related work more enjoyable. Interviews highlighted the importance of a harmonious work environment, with self-acceptance emerging as a psychological tool for maintaining well-being. Overall, it can be concluded that well-being in sensitive leaders depends on context.
