Co-designing ambient assistive technologies

Vision-based technologies offer new possibilities to assist individuals with cognitive disabilities to live independently. Ambient assistive technologies, such as smart mirrors and social robots, enable new ways to interact at home with AI technologies that can see.How can we engage people of all abilities in co-designing ambient assistive technologies?Participation in design is often defined on a spectrum where stakeholders can be categorised as simple informants (surveyed at the start of a project), evaluators (involved in trial iterations of a design), …

A mathematical model of disrupting cell-to-cell communication by bacteria

The emergence of resistance of bacteria to antibiotics presents a global healthcare challenge that intensifies the search for strategies to increase the effcacy of therapy. Several mechanisms are involved in resistance of bacteria against antibiotics such as mutations in genes, horizontal gene transfer, and biofilm formation. Bacteria can communicate with each other through production and response to local concentration of small molecules called autoinducers. This mechanism is called quorum sensing (QS).It has been suggested that QS can influence the resistance of …

Digital business models

The ongoing proliferation of a digital lifestyle and the exposure to global innovation raises the expectation level of customers for new products and services. The ongoing technological innovations make this possible, but require digital business models to turn them into viable commercial offerings. This is not only relevant for new (‘born-on-the-web’) companies, but also for traditional companies who run the risk of having their core business disrupted. While some struggle with the new business models (e.g. Kodak), others turn it into …

NHMRC Idea Grant: intergenerational living and learning models

This research project acts upon recommendations from the Inquiry into the Quality of Care and Residential Aged Care in Australia IQCRAC (2018) by developing an inter-generational model for senior living within school campuses in consultation with industry partners. The project differs from existing programs by establishing an economic policy-driven 'shared campus facilities and services' approach which is person-centred, health focused and socially inclusive. The model intends to be translatable across diverse Australian contexts, from urban realms where land is limited, …

Optimising sampling design for model discrimination of coral reef recovery

Natural disturbances including severe storms and bleaching events have devastating impacts on the Great Barrier Reef's health. Unfortunately, the increasing pressures associated with climate change are causing these disturbances to occur more frequently, for a longer duration and with more intensity. It's essential to understand the recovery dynamics between major disturbances so we can manage the health of the Great Barrier Reef under increased environmental pressures. Many studies modelling reef recovery assume a specific form for the growth dynamics. However, the …

Emergence of curvature-dependent growth in mathematical models of tissue invasion

The growth of biological tissues in 3D-printed scaffold pores occurs under strong geometric controls depending on the shape and size of the pores. How this control emerges from the interaction between spatial constraints and biological processes such as cell migration and cell proliferation remains largely unknown. Existing phenomenological models of tissue growth hypothesise growth laws which directly involve curvature without considering cellular mechanisms.Recently, a reaction–diffusion mathematical model of tissue growth in porous scaffolds was proposed to investigate cell-level behaviour using …

Equation learning for partial differential equation models of stochastic random walk models

Random walk models are often used to represent the motion of biological cells. These models are convenient because they allow us to capture randomness and variability. However, these approaches can be computationally demanding for large populations. One way to overcome the computational limitation of using random walk models is to take a continuum limit description, which can efficiently provide insight into the underlying transport phenomena. While many continuum limit descriptions for homogeneous random walk models are available, continuum limit descriptions for heterogeneous …

Executive Power and the Modern State

Dr Peta Stephenson is available to supervise students who are interested in exploring research topics in constitutional law, public law and statutory interpretation. Candidates interested in exploring the content and scope of executive power, relationships between the legislative and executive branches of government and issues in federalism are particularly encouraged. Projects can have a domestic or comparative focus.

Human-in-the-loop techniques to debug machine learning models

Machine learning models are being deployed in critical domains such as healthcare, education and fintech. The current approach to deploying machine learning models is based on considering a data-centric approach where the models are evaluated using performance measures on a test set. However, the high performance of the model on test data is not indicative of its reliability,An important aspect of reliability is in the understanding of what exactly a machine learning model encodes, and to verify if it learns …

Understanding cellular-spatial interplay between osteocyte networks and their environment using bioengineered 3D bone models

Project Reference: #1MPQC-NATP1Preferred Project Start: ImmediateHow do bone-forming cells communicate to build and maintain a functional bone matrix?Osteoblasts produce new bone extracellular matrix, while osteocytes become embedded within this matrix and form an interconnected network that helps regulate bone formation, adaptation and remodelling. Although these cells work closely together in the body, their interactions are difficult to reproduce and investigate using conventional two-dimensional cell culture.Bone-cell behaviour is strongly influenced by the surrounding microenvironment, including its composition, mechanical properties, mineral content, …

Detecting metabolic regime switching using dilution-resolved growth data: mathematical modelling, statistical inference and uncertainty quantification

Microbial populations rarely grow according to a single fixed physiological program. As nutrients are consumed, waste products accumulate and environmental stress changes, cells can transition between distinct metabolic regimes associated with growth, maintenance, fermentation, respiration and survival. These transitions are biologically important and industrially relevant, but they are often difficult to detect directly from standard growth curve summaries such as maximum growth rate, lag time, carrying capacity or area under the curve. This project will develop new mathematical and statistical methods …

Developing teacher capability in statistical reasoning and modelling

This project investigates how teachers develop confidence and capability in teaching statistics, probability, and modelling. It focuses on strengthening pedagogical and content knowledge in complex mathematical domains. This project builds on extensive experience in pre-service teacher education and research on strengthening statistical reasoning and conceptual understanding.
