Testing AI-generated judicial personas

This project explores the growing use of artificial intelligence in the legal profession to create “personas” of judges. These systems are trained on past decisions, legal reasoning, and perceived judicial attitudes to simulate how a judge might respond to a case. Lawyers can then use these simulated responses to test arguments and refine litigation strategy. The project examines how these tools work in practice, what assumptions they rely on, and how accurate or useful they truly are. It also considers broader …

Artificial intelligence (AI) to balance fluctuations of intermittent renewable energy sources

Artificial intelligence (AI) can play a significant role in analyzing and predicting energy consumption and production patterns from renewable sources such as solar and wind (Lyu & Liu 2021). This is particularly important due to the key challenge of intermittency, where major renewable sources for electricity, such as solar and wind, are subject to the inconsistencies of the weather (Watson et al., 2022).In this project, we investigate how AI and machine learning algorithms can optimize smart grids and other components …

Intergenerational responsibility of the sustainable energy transition: rethinking socio-technical systems through Indigenous knowledge

As the global community works to limit global warming to 1.5°C, accelerating the transition to sustainable energy systems remains a pressing challenge (IPCC, 2023). This transition is not only technical but deeply social, with intergenerational equity emerging as a critical concern. Decisions made today regarding infrastructure, resource use, and system design will have lasting consequences for future generations (UN, 2021). Indigenous knowledge systems, which emphasise long-term stewardship and relational accountability, offer valuable insights into rethinking socio-technical systems for sustainable futures …

Advanced numerical modelling to study fluid flow and heat transfer of ground-mounted photovoltaic panels for the power generation industry

The increase in global energy demand necessitates further advancement in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Advancements in PVs could potentially play a role to help meet the Paris Agreement of limiting global temperature increase to below 2°C.The performance of ground-mounted PV panels commonly found in solar farms depends on a myriad of factors such as tilt angle, microclimate i.e. wind loads, shading, solar irradiance, and dust deposition. This project aims to develop an advanced numerical model, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD), backed …

Building explainable and trustworthy intelligent systems

Existing machine learning-based intelligent systems are autonomous and opaque (often considered “black-box” systems), which has led to the lack of trust in AI adoption and, consequently, the gap between machine and human being. In 2018, the European Parliament adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which introduces a right of explanation for all human individuals to obtain “meaningful explanations of the logic involved” when a decision is made by automated systems. To this end, it is a compliance that an intelligent …
