Annual scholarship round

What is the annual scholarship round?

Each year we award a limited number of scholarships to students of exceptional research potential who are applying for a masters by research, PhD or professional doctorate.

Because scholarship numbers are limited, we conduct one highly competitive scholarship selection round each year, which we call our annual scholarship round.

When can I apply?

In addition to our regular annual round for scholarships, we're also offering an early targeted round for students to begin a PhD or professional doctorate in 2017. Apply by 28 February 2017.

To be considered for a scholarship as part of our annual round, you must apply for a research course before 30 September.

We award scholarships in early December, with funding starting the next calendar year.

What can scholarships be used for?

QUT research scholarships provide funding to assist with general living costs. We also have top-up scholarships to supplement living costs and sponsorships to cover tuition fees. Some scholarships also have associated allowances for relocation and thesis expenses.

Am I eligible to apply for an annual round scholarship?

You must have achieved a specific minimum level of academic excellence to be eligible to apply for each scholarship. Some scholarships also have other eligibility criteria that you must meet to be able to apply.

Read each scholarship's conditions and rules for the full eligibility criteria.

Publications as evidence of research experience

If you're using scholarly papers as evidence of your relevant research experience, the papers must have been published or accepted for publication by 30 September 2016. If they've been accepted for publication you'll need to provide evidence of that.

English language proficiency

If you're an international student you must have met our English language proficiency requirements (PDF file, 258.84 KB) by 30 September 2016.

Which scholarships can I apply for?

The scholarships available in the annual round are:

Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend (Domestic)
Pays a living allowance to domestic students.
QUT Postgraduate Research Awards (QUTPRA)
Pays a living allowance to domestic students and international students.
Indigenous Postgraduate Research Award (IPRA)
Pays a living allowance to a student of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
QUT Women's Re-entry Scholarship (WRE)
Pays a living allowance to a female student who can demonstrate a significant interruption to her academic career.

There are also faculty-funded, institute-funded and top-up scholarships available.

How do I apply for annual round scholarships?

You must apply for a research course before 30 September, and indicate on your course application that you want to be considered for one of our main scholarships.

You'll be considered for all scholarships you're eligible for.

Already a QUT research student?

If you're currently enrolled in a research masters, PhD or professional doctorate at QUT, you must apply online through HiQ between 1 September and 11.59pm on 30 September in any year.

You'll need to include an up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) outlining your research achievements (i.e. publications).

If you're applying for a QUT Women's Re-entry Scholarship (WRE), you'll need to attach a supporting statement explaining how you meet the scholarship's eligibility criteria.
